Chapter 2

Emilie held the furry wolf blanket in her trembling hands, her eyes darting around their home. Thoughts swirled through her mind like a tempest, each one more perplexing than the last. "How did they know where we live?" she mused aloud, her voice carrying a tone of deep contemplation. She couldn't fathom how this mysterious parcel had found its way to their doorstep.

Returning inside, Emilie found Rick in the kitchen and couldn't help but exclaim, "Rick, you won't believe what I found."

Rick, intrigued by her urgency, turned to face her. "What is it, Emilie? And where did you get that wolf furry blanket?" he asked, curiosity piqued. His eyes also fell upon the enigmatic object she held.

Emilie's brow furrowed as she replied, "I don't know. But before we investigate further, let's read the letter that came with it." With a sense of trepidation, Rick carefully opened the letter, his fingers tracing the handwritten words.

"Dear Amber," the letter began, its words etched with profound emotion, "We are so sorry that we left you in that dark alley. It was a painful choice we had to make to ensure your safety. Your mother and I knew it wouldn't be easy, but we believe Emilie and Rick will provide you with love and security, as if you were their own flesh and blood."

Rick continued to read aloud, his voice steady despite the increasing weight of the words, "The wolf furry blanket and the wolf pendant necklace are part of your heritage, Amber. We promise to share everything with you when the time is right. Please, Emilie and Rick, give Amber this letter only when she turns sixteen. We will always be there, watching over her in the shadows to keep her safe. We will meet you on her sixteenth birthday, which falls on the 15th of November. We love you, Amber."

Silence enveloped the room as Rick finished reading the letter. Emilie's mind raced with questions, her voice trembling as she spoke, "Rick, how did they know who we are? This is sending shivers down my spine." The implications of this revelation were staggering, and the mystery surrounding Amber's past seemed to deepen with each passing moment.

"I wish I could tell you," Rick began, his voice heavy with uncertainty, "but lately, I've been thinking that maybe the old woman was right."

Emilie couldn't help but share in Rick's unease. The mysterious letter and the sudden revelation about Amber's age had left them both perplexed. "How can Amber be turning sixteen in just five days, on the 15th of November?" Rick pondered aloud, his brow furrowed in thought. "It doesn't make sense. It's as if time has bent to accommodate her arrival."

Emilie, equally perplexed, shook her head gently. "I don't understand it at all," she confessed, her eyes searching for answers in the depths of Rick's gaze.

Rick, ever the protector, made a practical suggestion. "Perhaps we should retire for the night. Amber can sleep between us," he suggested, his voice carrying a soothing reassurance.

Emilie nodded in agreement, and they ascended the staircase, the weight of their newfound responsibilities pressing upon them.

Once in their bedroom, Emilie couldn't help but let her thoughts wander. She reflected on the journey that had brought them to this moment. "We tried so hard to have a baby," she thought, her mind drifting to the years of longing and hope. "And now, look at us," she mused, her heart filled with a mixture of awe and trepidation.
