KEITH (This means it's Keith's point of view)
"Freak."
"You're disgusting."
"Emo loser."
"You're so worthless."
"Why are you still here?"
"Can't your mom just send you away? Oh, that's right. She's dying, isn't she?"
I walked through the halls slowly, with my head down. My hood was up and covering most of my face. I knew the drill, I knew the routine. Matt and Lance would call me names up until lunch, then, when we were alone in the halls, Matt would beat me up. And Lance would stand there, not really sure whether to help me or help himself. Yeah, I knew. And I, hating to admit it, was used to it. I prepared for it and yet every time they called me names, it hurt me more than the punching. Lance and I used to be best friends. In middle school, we were inseparable. But Lance was always picked on and he hated it. He was scrawny at the time and couldn't really fight back. In grade eight Lance tried out for football and made the team, the boys on the team accepted him as a hard worker and invited him to hang out with them. Lance kind of forgot about me after awhile. Then I joined the drama club and started getting picked on by the team, including Matt. Lance laughed along with them. I had one thing from my mother, a wolf figurine. It was really important to me and I had brought it out to show Lance when he came over to apologize for picking on me. Lance knocked it over accidentally, but I was positive he did it on purpose. I ran and he picked up the pieces and walked out. He never talked to me again.
I started walking faster, holding my books tightly in my hands, the memories of my past making the names feel even truer. The halls were noisy and packed with kids all trying to get to their lockers, then class. The hall was like a porch, wrapping around the school. I lived in Oahu, Hawaii, it was basically hot outside all the time. Which was unfortunate because I had to wear hoodies every day. I had to because of the tears falling down my face, I had to hide the pain, the visual aspect of it at least. I had to cover up the black eyes and split lips.
I sometimes felt sorry for myself, sorry that no one cared enough to stick up for me, but I was glad. Because if someone were to stand up to me, they would only make it worse, they would only start to feel my pain, and that I couldn't live with myself if I had made someone feel the insufferable pain I felt every day. Obviously, I had thought about telling a parent, but who would care? The last two years I've lived on my own. I worked a job to pay for food and worried about schoolwork during the night.
I walked into the classroom and took a seat at the desk in the back right corner. Pidge took the seat beside me. Pidge was my best friend. Pidge and Hunk were all I had, they were my family. Today Pidge wore a hoodless green hoodie, with a weird white bird-like sign on the front and an orange collar. They had on dark green cargo shorts and were wearing their hair like they always did. Their brown hair was supposed to be a neat bob, but it somehow looked like spikes coming from their head, They wore round glasses, like Harry Potter, and flip-flops.
Pidge smiled at me. "Keith! You look... Well, you look like you always do. I can hardly see your face, your black hair and hood are covering your eyes. How am I supposed to have a sensible conversation if I can't see your eyes?"
I rolled my eyes behind my bangs and pushed them out of my eyes. "That better?"
"It'll do. Why'd you get a mullet anyways?" Pidge asked, snickering slightly.
"Here we go again." I smiled a little. Somehow Pidge could make you smile no matter what, even though they only really get along with technology. "I've had it for two years. I like it."
"And yet every day we ask about it." Hunk said, walking up to us from the door. He had brown skin and dark brown hair. He was wearing a yellow shirt, green shorts and an orange headband around his head. "You guys ready for the camp trip tonight?"
The teacher's voice was heard above the noise. "Alright. Settle down..."
~~~ Time skip: brought to you by Space Cat - The cat of the future. ~~~
The camp trip was organized awhile back, some sort of petition from the earth club. Hunk was part of the club and super excited, pidge, however, was trying to fit their laptop, iPhone, iPod, tablet, and PlayStation into their backpack. They weren't as excited to experience the 'outdoor adventure'. I was not exactly looking forward to the trip, but I wasn't loathing it like pidge. It was more like a feeling of dread and I didn't understand why, I just shrugged it of. I couldn't afford any of the camping gear, so I just wore my hoodie and jeans. The school provided me with a tent and that's really all that's necessary.
"Out into the wilderness! Camping for three nights. Eating marshmallows and hiking. Yay." I said sarcastically, standing on the last step of the bus.
Hunk laughed slightly from where he stood on the ground. "Come on, Keith. At least pretend to enjoy yourself."
"Fine." I coughed. "This is national adventurer Keith Kogane! Reporting from somewhere in the wilderness of Hawaii. This is especially dangerous due to the poisonous snakes and other animals and plants."
Pidge laughed and pushed me off the bus, then stepped down themselves. "Snakes are reptiles, genius. Suck it up! It's really pretty out here. Sure there's no cell service or way to access tech of any kind... Who am I kidding? This is awful! I hate it here."
I looked around. It was kind of pretty. There were trees everywhere, except for a small section, where we are setting up tents, that looked similar to a crop circle. The grass on the ground resembled clouds, looking light and fluffy, and moss-like. The treetops looked sharp and distinguished, causing the intricate details in the leaves and branches pop out so even the poor of sight could see the beauty and delicacy. The sky was light blue, although sunset was almost among us. The sky looked like the flame of a gas stove, blue with hints of orange here and there.
The teacher was trying to find the creek that was supposed to be located right by the campsite but wasn't. Matt walked up to me. Matt looked like, well, he looked like a football player. He was buff and tall, Towering over me easily. He was in dark grey cargo shorts and a black muscle shirt with a red bandana wrapped around his head. "So, Keith. You so poor that you can't afford camping gear? Need some help? I'm sure I could lend you a few." He said condescendingly.
He stopped talking to laugh and turn to Lance, who was wearing a baseball tee with blue sleeves and dark blue cargo pants. Lance was looking at the ground until Matt pushed him and he started snickering. "Yeah. You poor, poor thing. I'm sure someone will care about you in the future."
Pidge just rolled her eyes. "Let's go, Keith. These losers just feel sorry for themselves. That they're not as cool as us."
This statement made Matt laugh even harder and Lance coughed out a few ha, ha's. I stuck out my tongue and followed pidge to the tent pile in the middle of the crop circle. And as I was leaving, I could swear I heard Lance say sorry. I must have an ear infection or something, haven't been to the doctors in two years.
