Derek POV

I pour myself another shot of whisky on the rocks. I keep my eyes trained on Adina's sleeping form. She has been asleep for over a week. Doc says she will wake up any day now. Her body has healed and her bruises were fading away. Her color had come back, it was a good sign.

Alex and I continue taking turns keeping her company every day. I'd brought my best group of bodyguards back to work at the mansion. All my enemies and alliances heard I'd come out of hiding. I was in full swing with my business and mafia family standing at my side.

Omar and Sin had their groups taking round the clock shifts to ensure no one reached the perimeter of my estate. If Maqueuly discovered that Adina was here with me, I know he would send his best guys to infiltrate my lands and kill her. I was prepared to take him down. I wouldn't let him or anyone else hurt her. I owed her this after she saved our lives and risked everything to get me out of going to prison.
Alex had been impressed that she was able to pull it all off. This is the least I could do for her. Especially now that she was weak and unable to defend herself.

Adina's breathing is even from the fall and rise of her chest. It's the only reassurance I have that she is alive. I climb off the recliner I had been leaning back against and approach the side of her bed. She is dressed in a pink night gown today and her hair looks shiny. I would have to praise Jessica with keeping Adina clean everyday. Alex hired Jessica, a registered nurse to care for Adina's needs. She bathed and clothed Adina every two days and would ensure to remember to give her all her meds through the IV in her arm. Thanks to her and doc, we were able to start Adina on tube feeds, which we removed last night in hopes she would wake up in these next few days.

There is a slight tap on the door which startles me from gazing at the young woman laying on my bed. I walk over to the door and open it slightly. Alex is dressed in a casual t-shirt and pants. His hair is disheveled. His holster attached with his guns is the only armor on him.

"Just doing rounds inside the home. Is there anything you need me to grab for you or the girl?'

I narrow my eyes at him. "She has a name Alex."

"I apologize, I meant if you need anything for Adina." He quickly bows his head.

"Not at the moment. She's still sleeping." I point out.

My nerves were on edge and any little movement from her, I had doc at my beck and call regardless of the hour. A couple of times Adina had groaned or cried out in her sleep. We couldn't get her to wake up so we had to rub her back soothingly until either the pain or the nightmares went away. My temper was out of control and I felt terrible for treating my family like shit. I spent most nights too preoccupied for Adina that I hardly slept myself.

"She will wake up soon Derek. Don't stress yourself out by keeping yourself awake. We need you strong in case anything happens."

"I'll try and get some shut eye tonight." I grumble out as I rub my hands over my face in stress.

"A few of our guys are stationed out along the street if you need them, Sin and his group are here too."

"Good. Update me if anything changes I will keep my phone on the table next to me."

Alex nods and walks in the opposite direction. I close the door behind me as I grab onto my tie and unfasten it. Alex was one of my best mates. We had grown up together and now we ruled an empire at one another's side. Our lives were chosen for us, our father's created our path and gave us everything equipped to take over their legacies. They drilled all their knowledge into our heads making us understand that this was what we were meant to do. From a young age we were both tested and trained into our society. My father was an evil man and thankfully passed away from a stroke a few years back. My mom grieved for him and eventually left me in charge of the Estate. After his passing a lot of things changed under my ruling. I admit to being a criminal but it wasn't at all what people had in mind. I was fighting for the freedom of innocent people. I used my title for the better. It did require me to break law every now and again but it was a price I was willing to pay as long as people like Maqueuly got what they deserved.
