This is inspired by a book called The Guardian Herd. I suggest you go and read at least the first book or look at summaries before reading this but you don't have too.
Thunderstone trotted through the plains of Sun Herd, heading back to his dam. He was a young colt, foal of Oaksun and Startail. He snorted quietly as some of the other foals looked over. He was uniquely colored, black and white. No pegisi were black, not unless they were the black foal of Anok, the most powerful pegisi of Anok. Star, who watched over the herd, was a black Pegasus. He was a legend, for many reasons. He was the first black foal to be born and live to his birthday to receive the hundred year star's gift in 400 years. He had brought a pretty chestnut mare named Morningleaf back to life after she had taken the over-stallion deathblow for him. A few months after that he defeated Nightwing, the Destroyer. Nightwing was another black foal who lived to his birthday 400 years before Star, he had almost wiped out all pegisi.

Thunderstone swatted a fly away with his tail as it landed on him. He saw Star, under the shade of the Grandmother Tree with Morningleaf. This was where Sun Herd had fought Mountain Herd when it had united with some of the herds to wipe out Sun Herd. Sun Herd had lost, devastated. Many pegisi had died including Star's mentor Grasswing. Grasswing had ended the war with a 1 on 1 with Rockwing, the over-stallion had murdered Grassing's colt many seasons before that. Unfortunately, the mighty warrior lost the fight and now flew in golden meadow, where pain and sickness and suffering would not follow.
Thunderstone's tail twitched as he saw Star look over at him, then up at the sky as if to expect the bright glow of the Hundred Year Star to glow there. Thunderstone was about to open his black wings to fly up, when he heard Star call him over. He turned and trotted over.
"Yea?" he asked, tilting his head curiously.
His ears flicked forward, locking on him. Thunderstone stood tall, resisting the urge to back down or lower his head. He knew he was only a colt, but he wanted to show that he could do it. That he could stand tall even when Star himself was staring him in the face.
"...Never mind." He shook his head and turned to Morningleaf, who was looking at Star with a stare so intense; Thunderstone couldn't help but wonder what she was thinking.
Thunderstone dipped his head and went over to his dam, Startail. She greeted him with nuzzles and put her snout down to graze as he nursed.
He savored the sweet milk, knowing that only in a few weeks he would be weaned and would no longer be able to drink it. He turned when he was done and stretched his wings. His wings were bigger than other, not too big but big enough for them to be a bit of a burden. Because of this he always practiced stretching his wings, working the muscles.
Once the sun started to set and Sun Herd settled down for the evening, Thunderstone nestled next to his mother, drinking in her warm comforting scent. She was a beautiful dark grey Pegasus that faded into a lighter grey with lighter spots along her back and shoulder. Her wide wings were grey we well, showing who her former herd was, which was Mountain Herd. She had creamy blonde hair that flowed down her neck and down her muzzle.

Thunderstone awoke to the squeals and shrieks of pegisi. He scrambled to his hooves, not understanding what was going on.
"Mama?" he whinnied "mama??!" he bleated like a new born foal, spinning in a circle. Around him he heard squeals of pain, bones snapping, foals and mares shrieking in terror. He reared, realizing what was happening. It was a raid! He galloped away, his ears twitching as he heard strange clicks and whistles.
He straightened his neck, running faster. He wouldn't fly, he was no safer there then he was on the ground. His breath came out hard and fast. The clicks and whistles were still there. He rakes his brain to remember if any of the elders had said anything about them. He skirted to a halt as he heard his mother's whinny. He whirled around to see 2 stallions grabbing her wings. She was thrashing and managed to kick one in the chest but he didn't let go.
"Mama!!" he whinnied loudly and was about to chase after her when something snagged at his wing. He bit back the cry of pain and bucked. He was tall for being a foal, but he was inexperienced and his little legs did nothing against the mare that was holding him. Then it dawned on him. Sky Herders. They were the ones who were making the strange clicking and whistling noises. "Mama..." he sniffled, his dark eyes going wide. The sky herder mare was joined by another and they lifted him by the roots of his wings, making it hurt for him to move the slightest inch.
He watched as the stallions pulled at his mother's beautiful wings. She was bloody, so bloody that he couldn't even see her features. Hot tears came to his eyes as she said. "we will see each other again." She breathed "I promise." She managed to say before one of the stallions grabbed her tail and slammed her to the ground with such force he was sure that it broke every bone in her body.
He closed his eyes, letting the mares drag him towards Mountain Herd territory.
