Dusk and dawn are playfully dancing with each other as the dawn is arising to brighten the day. The beautiful song of the birds ringing through the dimly lit trees.

Chloe awoke from the sound of her alarm buzzing on the side table. She somberly stretched, blinking the sleep from her eyes, and gently tapped the little red button glowing on her phone.

She sat up slowly on the bed, and grabbed her phone to check the notifications she had gotten over the night.

Sara:
Chloe, text me as soon as you're awake xx

Sara was Chloe's best friend, and had been all throughout her school life. Together they were polar opposites, night and day, braving through this cold world together.

Chloe:
I'm awake xx

Chloe set the phone back on the side table and got up. Her long, tan legs guiding her into the near by closet, where she grabbed her uniform. The uniform was the standard short, khaki skirt with a white button-up blouse accented by a purple tie.

She studied herself in the mirror. At only five foot three, she was beautiful. Long, blonde hair that snaked it's way over her shoulders and around her curves. Slate gray eyes that pierced whatever they lay upon.

"Chloe," she heard her name bounce through the hallway, "Are you awake?"

"Yeah." She called down. She walked over to the side table and grabbed her phone, glancing at the time. Shit, she thought, I'm late for morning prayer.

Lazily she walked down the stairs into the huge family dining room, where the smells of fresh cooked pancakes and maple syrup greeted her. She felt stinging eyes piercing through her skin as she sat down.

"Now," her father, Joseph, said with anger and disgust in his voice, "as the last of the Sutherland's decided to grace us with her presence, we can begin." Every one at the table had held hands, hanging their heads low for the prayer.

"Dear Lord," Chloe's soft spoken mother squeaked out like a little mouse, "We thank you for blessing our family with this meal, and for always protecting us. Thank you, Lord, for never turning your back on us; for showing us the true way into your lighted kingdom. Amen."

"Amen." Repeated both Joseph and Chloe.

Chloe raised her head, staring at the food in front of her. She wasn't particularly hungry this morning, but decided to take a couple bites as to not anger her father.

Once she had finished eating the breakfast prepared for her, she grabbed her book bag and keys. She leaned over to kiss her mother on the top of the head.

"I'm going to pick up Sara," she said. "I'll be home after class."

Chloe and her mother always had a close bond, but it was a bond more felt than spoken. The most Chloe ever hears her mother speak is during the morning prayer.

"Chloe," Her father demanded, "You tell Miss Johnson that church is no place for a woman to wear such revealing shirts. The next time she shows up to my church like that there will be consequences."

"Yes, father." Chloe muttered back, before heading out the door and entering her car.

She pulled out her phone to see multiple text messages from Sara.

Sara:
Guess who has a date this weekend!!
Okay, don't guess. It's me xx
I'm so excited I have no idea what to wear.
He's so hot Chloe, you have no idea.
Chloe?
Oh, shit, I forgot about your morning prayers. Lmao, oops. <3
You still coming to get me??

Chloe shook her head and let out a little chuckle as she quickly tapped away her next message.

Chloe:
On my way xx by the way, father was not pleased with your attire for church.

Sara:
Tell your father to blow me.

Sara was considered the black sheep of Greens-Borrow. The whole town was filled with religious, bible-abiding citizens. Sara, although raised Christian, never acted it. She had shoulder length black hair, and deep emerald green eyes that planted a seed in every soul. She was about five foot seven, beautifully sculpted, and for eighteen she had the body of a model. However, her style on her 'allowed' casual days consisted of band tees that she was shunned for listening to, and black tight jeans accented by sky high boots. Sara was more sexual than most of the girls around here, which is why she attracted the most attention. She was the wildfire in the meadow of plain.

Chloe pulled up to the house, honking the car horn to let her friend know she had arrived. Out of the corner of her eye she could see Sara bouncing down the steps towards her car.

"Chloe," she said as she had taken her rightfully earned place in the front, "hi."

"Sara," Chloe nodded back. "So, who is this guy? He can't be from Greens-Borrow."

Sara smiled at her friend. "He is, he just moved here actually. He isn't one of these religious freaks." She popped her mouth open and closed it real quick. "No offense."

Chloe just shrugged it off. She wasn't, by any means, one of those religious freaks. But it was an act she had to keep up. She didn't have a choice, really.

They pulled up to the school fifteen minutes early. This was the usual morning routine. Sara propped her feet up on the dash and dug through her purse.

"Smoke?" She asked the blonde sitting next to her, who nodded her head. "Thought so." Out of her purse she pulled a long, perfectly rolled blunt. She flicked her lighter a few times before the flame blazed out of it, sparking the blunt up. Sara took a long, hard drag off of it before passing it to Chloe.

"Do you want to go out tonight?" Sara asked in between coughs, smoking beautifully dancing out of her mouth.

Chloe shook her head no. "Can't." She said simply before dragging off the blunt.

Sara knew what that meant and just dropped it all together.

Blunt finished, and with burning red eyes the girls doused themselves with vanilla perfume. It never hid the smell of marijuana, only danced with it.

"His name is Lukas." She said bluntly. "He's twenty one, has red hair and green eyes. He's super tall, very muscular. He said he even has a friend here we wouldn't mind hooking up with someone." Sara nudged her friend with her elbow.

That sentence caught Chloe off guard, she almost choked on her spit. "Uh, yeah. I can't date, though, Sara. You know my father."

That might've not been the whole truth. Yes, Sara did know her father. Hell, every one in town knew her father. But no one actually knows her father to the extent that Chloe does.

Joseph, although a man of God, is also a man of himself. There are some things the church knows about, some things they praise him about. But there are other things, much worse things, that they don't.
