HELL OF A WAY TO DIE INTRODUCTION •••
"GORY, GORY"
The world was at war. September 1, 1939 Nazi Germany invaded Poland, igniting France and the United Kingdom to declare war. By 1941 Nazi Germany conquered and controlled most of the continental Europe and Pearl Harbor's waters churned red — the sleeping giant had been poked, and it wanted blood.
Carwood Lemieux enlisted in the United States Army as a medic on December 10, 1941 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His mama cried that day, gripping her eldest son in her arms, praying her hold would keep him there, far away from bullets and bombs. By the next week Carwood Lemieux stood amongst men who had volunteered their lives for their country in Camp Toccoa, Georgia to begin their training as United States Paratroopers.
"WHAT A HELL OF A WAY TO DIE,"
War was an endless carnage. Lemieux watched his men die, hands red from the blood of his friends, the people he couldn't save. Those who had been together since training, who climbed Curahee and fought on D-Day were few and far between; the faces around Lemieux becoming increasingly unfamiliar until he couldn't even recognize his own. Transfers in the middle of war were unheard of. Men were bound together, baring the weight of their losses together, shouldering the guilt and nightmares of what they had seen; Lemieux was alone, slowly crushed under the weight as his men laid broken and dead around him. Word of the 107th's need for a medic reached Major Lipton, who slowly watched the Louisiana man crumble before him; getting him away from the reminder of those they lost was the closest he could do to sending the man home.
The 107th was filled of brave men who grew to idiolize the doctor for what his previous company fought through. But these men weren't his, his men were in the fields of Holland and snow of Bastogne; Lemieux alienated himself out of fear of watching more people he cared for die because he couldn't save them. Bucky Barnes wouldn't have given the medic another look if he didn't see so much of his best friend in him. They were the type of person who cared more about others than himself, who blamed themselves for matters out of hands; and just like he found himself with Steve Rogers years ago, Bucky fell in love with Carwood Lemieux.
