I sat on my bed. My suitcase sitting next to me. I stared at the door, expecting my mom to walk in any second and tell me to wash up for dinner. But she never did. Her and dad left me. Alone. Scared. And unwanted.

They are coming to get me. At any time, they are going to walk in my house and tell me to come with them. I don't want to, I can't. I won't go into foster care. I'm sixteen, can't I make my own decisions? I guess not until I'm eighteen.

Every second that passes my heart stops. I finally hear the car rolling up. Until that moment I was sure I was just going to climb out my window once they were in the house. But now I'm not so sure. Would I get punished if they found me? I wouldn't survive long. I only have a thousand dollars saved up in my collage account.

I heard them coming up the stairs. I looked around my room hoping I didn't forget anything. That's when there was a knock on my door. "Jessica. Open the door." I panicked. I couldn't go with them. I was right I need to escape. "One second!" I called. I ran to my window and unlatched it.

Two more knocks. "Jessica? Are you ready?" I started opening the window slowly, trying not to make any noise. "Not yet!" I called back. "Okay I'll give you two minutes." Enough time for me to escape.

Once I opened the window all the way I threw my suitcase and duffel bag onto the ground. Then I put one foot, then the other, out the window, jumped, and landed on the ground. My heart started racing. Did they hear that? I wondered. My two minutes were almost up so I started running. As fast and silent as possible.
