The Aftermath: Prologue

I woke up as sunlight streamed through my window, prepared for another day of rations.I stumbled down the steps down to the kitchen, and grabbed a can of peaches off of the dusty shelf, blowing off the dust that clung to the dull, metal can. I then walked into the kitchen and grabbed the rusty can opener, praying that it would work. I pressed on the lever that activated it... and nothing. I sighed in exasperation and weariness, grabbing the handheld can opener from the drawer. I finally got the can open and looked in the overhead cupboard. I found one bowl and poured out my can of bland peaches. I then walked over to the chair in the living room, brightened by the bright sunlight cascading through the wide living room window. I sat down and turned on the TV, expecting to hear about another day of war and how many people died. However, surprisingly, today was going to be different.Oh, if I could only see the adventure that stretched in front of me.

The reporter's head popped up on the television screen as he spoke.

"....Evening communist rebels stormed the capital and executed President Dexaler in The Tunnel. They planted bombs on the track and it exploded, causing the tunnel to collapse on the train, crushing it and it's passengers. The whole country will mourn his death."

I suddenly turned off the TV, feeling very distressed, and thought about what I just heard. I remembered the Tunnel's construction back in 2024. It was supposed to be a railroad tunnel from the White House to New York City. Then I thought about what the future of America. Suddenly, I felt fear bubbling up inside of me. And yet, I knew what I had to do. I had to leave the country.
