BackTrack was a Linux distribution that focused on security, based on the Knoppix Linux distribution aimed at digital forensics and penetration testing use. (Wikipedia)

Back|Track Linux is an open source GPL-complaint Linux distribution built by penetration testers, for penetration testers with development staff consisting of individuals spanning different languages, regions, industries and nationalities. (Offensive Security)

BackTrack originally started with earlier version of Live Linux distributions called Whoppix, IWHAX, and Auditor. Ang BackTrack ay dinesenyo bilang all-in-one Live CD na ginagamit sa mga security audits and specifically crafted to not leave any remnants of itself on the system.

BackTrack distribution was originated from the merger of two formerly competing distributions which focused on penetration testing and that was the WHAX, a Slax-based Linux distribution developed by Mati Aharoni, isang security consultant and Auditor Security Collection, a Live CD based on Knoppix and developed by Max Moser which included over 300 tools organized in a user-friendly hierarchy.
