"Good morning! You're up and ready to go so early?" You nodded giving a smile back to be formal responding to her in sign language you learned recently to develop a persona that you are deaf. Thank goodness you have your earpiece that is instead an alarm for danger only. Pulling up a counterfeit plane ticket, a passport, and other items all for show pretending that you need catching a plane.
She nodded back understanding waving you goodbye. You are impressed by her cheerful mood in the mornings, despite it being 4:00 am. The elderly do have hard times sleeping and at a time do not require much sleep. You took off the earpiece exiting as you luckily catch a taxi waving to the upcoming vehicle. The cab was a mess, soda cans, styrofoam cups, wrappers from various snacks and bits of lint scattered all over the floor. At the minimum, you got a ride. "Where to?" The taxi driver asked looking back. Answering to where ever is safest and far from here you decided to go to a university even though you do not attend it. It is now from downtown by many miles and highways, and the educational grounds consist of fast foods nearby. A plus you have to say.
Being able to pay by cash only with no records to a card or bank account with a fake identity and the ability to speak a name that isn't yours. A plus. Your face is on the files of security cameras. A negative. Paying the taxi, as you stepped out of the car. You went to the nearest bench rummaging for a wig and shades. The sun has not come out yet thankfully with the streets being less noisy and no human being walking around but you alone. Seeing coast is clear, it is incredibly unlikely for someone to step outside in the morning when the sky is dark and gloomy. The street lights are nevertheless on with their yellow hued shine on the small traffic of cars.
The security cameras are no bothered here, for you are nowhere near the entrance of a random university picked out from the pamphlet of this city. There plenty of trees and bushes to hide the duffel of clothes and belongings in before you enter a place to arrange a meal. You hid in a convenient cluster of bushes while putting on a disguise. Tucking in strands of hair possibly missed after fastening it up before capping on the wig. An idea came to mind to get a haircut for you have outgrown your hair to change identities before. Snap open a pair of shades you slip them on feeling the cold metal against your skin and ears. Receiving the same cold sensation with a leather bomber jacket in exchange for your dark hoodie. Never remain the same always a separate person up and moving. You constantly say that yourself.
Crossing a street to a 24-hour open fast food that brightly glows its fluorescent lights from the windows and open sign with few parked cars. Welcomed by employees, one looked pissed. You do have some stares from a few customers in the store in the following. You walked differently from your usual pace into another persona.
Smoothly walked to the food counter ready to take your order like a swagger. It doesn't matter what you pick. Your body is in need of food. You picked out whatever is available on the menu showing on the block of text stuck on the ceiling.
You uttered them a name, Raven. As the man is writing down all the things, you ordered offers you an empty cup to fill your drink in. You, however, keep getting stares from a few people. It seems they are checking you out. It is odd to see someone who wears like they are from some 1980s American movie outfit. Just suddenly came in to partake of junk food at 5:30 in the morning.
As you fill your drink, you get notified on your phone pulling it out. You stared at the screen blankly to see your bug in your bag you left in the bushes is picking up a curious animal. It is not an issue as you triggered a harmless shock to the squirrel. You stare off into space, taking your drink to a separate table. And placing your backpack next to you on your right near a wall. You look more carefully at the apps. Mainly the contacts and text messages.
All empty and nothing. Only commercial and advertising phones call you. Blocking them every time and the people who have the wrong phone number. You are unbothered by this. There are times a stranger is willing to enjoy a nice chat with you in person. And it ended well. Then you never see them again, nor they see you either at another time. And coincidentally someone called you out using the false name. Briefly noting they must have overheard.
You slowly looked up hesitantly, still having your poker face on it was a group of friends hanging out you assumed. One guy asked, "Are you new here?"
You replied softly, "Maybe."
The rest of the group snickers this time this was a gal questioning you. "Do you go to that college over there? Cuz, we go there and ne'er seen a face like you here," the accent is rich and thick with condescending pride brewing with her.
You noticed something was off with them. That girl is lying through her teeth. The college they are referring to does not allow students to go outside at this time. For there is a gate tightly regulated with card scanners and metal poles that will not turn. Since the system, you easily hacked into thankfully is programmed to stop students exiting and entering in even with a card at a strict schedule.
Hearing your order is finished, you escaped the conversation momentarily. Of course, this crew is not allowing you to go so smoothly. You continue eating, ignoring their existence. You pulled out your trusty laptop and headphones to block out all the unnecessary noises. One approaches you have tried to snatch one of your food. You plucked it before them calmly consuming the morsel. At the top of your open laptop, you see a man seated before you smile smugly. And then the others were standing in front of you on your left.
You continue minding your own business. You knew this would not go down safely as you like it. But thankfully at the corner of your eye, you see a police car parking through the window. A few cops came in with the motive of searching someone. The group that was ready to pounce on you backed away to sit back to their proper place, but the man in front of you. The two cops that are in their thirties notice the peculiar behavior and then recognized the group.
Calling them out, the group runs out of the store to another exit. Besides the ones the police are blocking they call for back up while one cop with salt and pepper facial hair was pulling the man down handcuffing him. You have accidentally involved something in the wrong place and time. As the cops were about to arrest you for they assume you are part of the group. You were let go afterward for the employees were telling their account of the situation.
Receiving apologies from them and getting questioned to tell them is that you are not a civilian here, and you're traveling around the world. That is all they can get from you. With the help of your glasses, they cannot read you so well. They are reading glasses as well.
It was already 7:00 am with the sun rising in the sky when you get out of that place, making a beeline for your belongings in the bushes. You shoved the wig in the bag and let your hair down. Nobody noticed you coming out of the bushes as you walk down the sidewalk into the slow busy streets of the city.
