Maitri

(Friendship)

The tinkling noise of gold coins flowing down a maroon shawl, spread the room. The royal priest ran to catch hold of the gold coins, his eyes shone with greed.

"Tomorrow, I want you to perform my son's coronation in such a way, so devotedly that no one may ever be able to overthrow him. He must get the blessings of all the deities, tit"Mayuri ordered the priest with much of an attitude.

She turned to Sayantani who was sitting quietly beside her watching the greedy priest. Her innocent mind wasn't able to register Mayuri's shrewd ploy. The only thing she knew was that her dear father in law, who was no less than a father to her, had given Arnav the responsibility of the throne and it is wrong that his wish has not been fulfilled.

"But mother in law, father in law had promised Rajkumar Arnav the throne." Sayantani kept her stand.

Both being of almost the same age, Sayantani had always regarded Arnav as her brother and a friend. She didn't share much of a bonding with Shyam. She had got marriend to him just a few months ago and so she needed time to adjust with him. She was very scared of the cruel drunkard that Shyam was.
So she always maintained a distance from him and also she had not let him touch her even once, by always making some or the other excuse. Shyam was quite frustrated with this childish kind of behaviour of hers. After all, according to him, it was his wife's duty to please him.

" Who are you to talk about promises? Every girl is wedded to a family with a promise that she shall be the bearer of the future generation. So, if you are talking about promises only, then tell me Rajkumari, where is my grandson? Where is the future generation of Aaranya? "

Sayantani quietly bent her head down not able to face Mayuri's insults.

"See! You have no answer! Here, I am making you the empress of Aaranya, the most powerful kingdom in the world and you can't even give us an heir? Shame on you!"

"See! You have no answer! Here, I am making you the empress of Aaranya, the most powerful kingdom in the world and you can't even give us an heir? Shame on you!"

Not able to bear the insults, Sayantani ran away with tears in her eyes. Nobody except Anjali or Arnav ever listened or empathized to her in this palace. But now both of them were already in grief, she couldn't go and cry to them.

Meanwhile, Mayuri summoned the minister. She had bribed him to make the announcement that Shyam would be the next king. She had promised the minister that if he does the announcement, she shall get his daughter married to Shyam and she shall be his empress.

"Proceed, chief minister.
Prepare for your daughter's wedding, it shall be done before the Empress' coronation. "

"Thank you, your majesty, for your grace!"

The minister knew he had sold his soul to the devil for his selfish motives but he couldn't deny such an irresistible offer from the queen herself.

As the minister left, Mayuri gave herself a pat on her back and said to herself.

"Now that puny little war compensation who is my beloved Arnav's wife can't do anything! Ha Ha Ha!"

Little did she know her Arnav and his 'little war compensation' had other plans for her!

Tarini walked across the corridor, thinking of a plan to stop Shyam's coronation. She had just seen Shyam trying to wear the emperor's crown and needless to say, he looked pathetic. Yet he sat and admired his useless self for hours and hours making Khushi feel disgusted. She was spying on him so as to find some clue about how they might have managed to kill her mighty father in law.

Engrossed in this thought, she clashed with Sayantani who was hiding her tears woth her veil.

"Namaskar, Rajkumari!(Greetings!) Where are you going in such a hurry?"

Sayantani silently tried to hide her sobs but Tarini's alert ears heard them.

"Aap ...You are crying? Why ... What happened...tell me ...didi..." Tarini kept a hand on Sayantani 's shoulder concernedly.

Sayantani looked at Tarini with moist eyes. She had been the youngest in her father's palace so no one had ever called her 'didi' that also so lovingly. She felt pity for this young girl in front of her who had faced so many tragedies in her life - her father's death, the fall of Padmadurg, her becoming a war compensation and how everyone scowled at her face saying that as soon as she set her foot in the palace the Emperor died under mysterious circumstances.

"I feel sorry for you, Rajkumari Tarini,"She said hugged Tarini.
"For all that you faced- your father then your forced marriage with Rajkumar Arnav. It must have all been so depressing."

"Not really, I am not depressed didi. He wasn't my real father and my husband is a good man." Tarinii tried to console her.

"So what? Even the emperor was not my own father yet I mourn his death deeply!" Sayantani sobbed thinking about her dead father in law.

"That is because he loved you as a daughter. My father, we better not talk about him... Even in midst of all this sadness, I feel happier here than how I felt at Padmadurg. My husband has said that he is my friend now."

"Trust him to do so! Rajkumar Arnav is a very jolly fellow but when it comes to war or his kingdom, he becomes the most dangerous person on earth just like father in law!" Sayantani smiled wiping away her tears.

"You seem to know a lot about our father in law, didi... " Tarinii tried to extract some information from Syantani.

"Of course, I know him very well. After all he was my father's best friend. I have spent a major part of my maiden life as Rajkumari Anjali's friend. I used to play with her in this palace only. So I know all secrets of this palace!" Sayantani smiled widely remembering her childhood.

This struck Tarini as a brilliant idea.

"So didi, how was father in law? I never got the opportunity to talk to him. I haven't seen him in person except for the day he said I would be the..." Tarini's voice slowed down as she thought of that fateful day when she was bound in chains.

"He was angry at you that time, that's why he was rude to you. He liked you, Rajkumari. In fact, he himself had told me how fascinated he was seeing your courage to survive the war and the night at the prison. He thought you were a perfect bride for Arnav."

Tarinii blushed on hearing this.
