I laid in bed that night thinking about the future. If someone had told me a month ago that I was talking to a who could read minds, I'd laugh in your face.
And then I'd run away.
But that was the truth. Although, a part of me didn't want to believe it. A part of me genuinely wanted this new side of me. The side that had been locked away for years.
The side that was blocked from memory.
And so as I looked at the clock on my nightstand, I willed myself to be asleep by 12:30.
Which was in 5 minutes.
I heard somewhere that if you think about something enough before you fall asleep, you'll dream of it.
And so that's exactly what I did.
I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and imagined the worst thing I could imagine.
That day.
Within seconds I was pulled into the dream.
The memory was clear. I had just woken up, and I pulled the light pink covers from off me. I noticed the light drizzle of falling rain outside, and excitement ran through me. Whenever it rained, we had a movie day. And so I ran to my door to go downstairs.
When I made my way to the staircase however, I stopped when I heard deep voices downstairs. Voices I had never recognized. I was shy as a kid, and so I had ducked behind the wall as I made my way downstairs.
Peeking my head between the banister, I looked into the living room. Mom and Dad were sitting on the couch, holding each others hands as they stared up at the two men that towered above them.
"I will not play these games anymore, Lucas. You are well aware of the consequences. That child is dangerous, and if we do not take her, there will be hell to pay." The man said towards my Father. He said nothing as he held my Mom's hand.
"She is Destined, but not for here. Not on this Earth. She is too powerful to be here, and too valuable to waste. We must take her." The man took a step towards my parents, taking something shiny from his pocket.
What was that?
I leaned forward, hoping to get a better glimpse at the shiny thing in his hand.
Is that a crystal?
My parents gripped each other, and I felt their panic seep into my veins. But despite the high level of anxiety radiating from them, they stood their ground. "I will tell you nothing, Xavier. My daughter will thrive. She will protect, not destroy. She will become strong, yes. But she will not become evil." My Father spat out as he sheilded my Mother from the crystal.
I couldn't understand what they were talking about, although I knew it was about me. But I understood the seriousness of this situation. And so I stayed silent on the staircase, gripping my nightgown as I listened to the conversation.
Xavier just laughed. He lifted the crystal in front of his face, staring that the clear rock. Suddenly, it began to glow. From deep within, a soft purple glow started to illuminate. "That's a shame, Lucas. Truly, it is. Because now I have to do this the dirty way." He lowered the crystal to his side and sighed. "And you know how much I hate doing things the dirty way."
My Father lunged at Xavier, but before he could even put his hands on him, the crystal pulsated a wave of purple energy at him. My Father was thrown back, and landed next to my Mother. His body shook as if he were being electricuted, and then suddenly stopped. My Mother watched in shock, looking at him as he took his last breath. He laid lifeless next to her, nothing more than a corpse, and my Mother held back a choking sob as she stared at him.
Suddenly she turned her attention back to Xavier. Fury and rage filled her face as she stood. She looked at the man standing next to Xavier. Suddenly he groaned and grabbed his head. He fell to his knees as he yelled out in pain. A split second later, he limply fell to the ground.
Xavier grinned as he stared at his now dead companion. He seemed not at all affected by the situation as he looked at my Mother once more. "Grace, one last time. Where is she? You can either tell me, or you can end up like Lucas." He motioned towards my Father.
"Rot in Hell." She spat, clenching her fist together.
Xavier lifted the stone towards my Mother. The glowing intensified as he sent my Mother a wide smile.
"See you there."
Another pusling wave crashed into my Mother. Her eyes rolled into the back of her head as she fell to the floor; the sound of her hitting the carpet making me sick.
And then I realized I was going to be sick.
Yet, I couldn't move. I was paralyzed with fear. And as Xavier shoved the stone back into his pocket and began walking towards the staircase, I took one deep breath in
and
ran.
