Lance stared out of the cab window in awe. The big city of Altea was incredible as his mom had said it would be. Being from a small town in the country, this place was breathtaking, like something out of a movie. He watched as people walked by. They all seemed to be in a rush to get somewhere important, and none of them stopped to even acknowledge the people around them. Yeah, living in this city was going to take some getting used to, but Lance felt like he was ready.
He spent the rest of the cab ride like a little boy at Disneyland. He gasped at the smallest things, even a fountain. They had fountains in his hometown, but here, everything seemed to have a magical sense to it. Lance imagined sitting at that same fountain with his future girlfriend. She would be interested in astrology, as was he, and a senior, and they would sit at that fountain holding hands and talking about their signs for hours. Then, he would lean over to her and-
"We're here." The cab driver interrupted Lance's daydream to announce this in a rough voice. Lance shook his head to clear his thoughts, thanked and handed the cab driver a five, and stepped out onto the college campus with his bags. His college campus. (Well, not his exactly, but it was close enough).
Out of all the things Lance had seen in the city so far, this was by far the most amazing. People flooded in and out of the doors, friends greeted and hugged, parents said their last goodbyes. It was a crazy, overwhelmingly emotional scene for Lance to view. For Lance to be in.
Lance snapped himself back to reality and began heading for the main doors. Once inside, he got his schedule from a nice lady with a British accent. Her nametag read "Allura".
Man, she's pretty, thought Lance as he thanked her and headed for the elevator. He pressed the button for the fifth floor and the elevator began to move surprisingly fast for an older building. He stepped out quickly once it reached the fifth floor.
Okay, dorm number 518. 518, 518, 518, Lance scanned the numbers along the many doors. Eventually, he saw 517 then 518. This is it, he thought to himself, I am officially a freshman. With that he opened the door to his new home for the next year.
Lance was immediately greeted with the sight of a black-haired, dark-eyed guys about his height. He was sitting on one of the beds, clearly engrossed in whatever he was reading. His enormous headphones prevented him from noticing Lance's entrance. When he did, though, he just gave a quick glance up and then went back to his reading.
Okaayy, Lance thought, not a great start but I'm sure he'll warm up to me. He is my roommate for the next year after all.
Lance dragged his suitcase over to the unoccupied bed and let his backpack fall off on the floor with a light thud. He fell back down onto the mattress. It wasn't hard, but it wasn't perfect either. Whatever, it'll work, he thought.
He began unpacking all of his belongings and putting them into the right places. Lance organized for about an hour or so before feeling his stomach grumble. He checked the clock that read 7:13 and glanced up at his roommate, who's name he still hadn't learned. The black-haired boy was still sucked into the same book, in the same position on the bed. Lance was hesitant before waving at him from his bed. Black Hair glanced at Lance with a scowl before removing his headphones.
"Yeah?" he said in an irritated tone of voice. His voice was much deeper and raspier than Lance had expected it to be.
"Oh, uh, I was just gonna go get some food and was wondering if you wanted anything," he said, "I'm Lance by the way."
"Keith. Ramen. I'll pay you back." He responded simply before putting his headphones back on.
Lance, flustered, answered with a combination of four different words for "okay" even though Keith wasn't listening. What was this guy's problem? What had Lance done that made him so pissed?
Lance shook it off and remembered he was going out to get food. He quickly grabbed his phone and wallet before exiting the dorm. As the elevator made it's way down, Lance thought about his schedule for the next day which, of course, he'd memorized. He recited it a few times as if it were lines for a play when he left the elevator and stepped outside the building. He was instantly hit with a bitter cold from the wind and wished he'd brought a coat. Lance shivered and started heading in the general direction of where the decent food was in Altea.
Now, where to find a ramen shop. . .
