It started when they lost most of their money. They didn't do anything about it, and eventually ate all the food they had. Their parents didn't care, and often blamed the girls for their misfortune and punished them for nothing at all.
Eventually they became starving and couldn't wait any longer. Ayaka went out shopping. While she was there, she thought nobody would notice if she stole a packet of biscuits. So she did, and took them back to Nana. Together they ate the packet in five minutes, and were still ravenous, so Ayaka went out to get more. They didn't feel guilty for their crime, and got used to it.
So they did it every day, and that's what they thought was normal. And whenever people asked why, they were confused. Wasn't it normal, Nana always thought, when you need something, you just take it and go. Why go through all the trouble of worrying over money when you don't have it?
"We'll take the food, easily," Ayaka said and signalled for Naomi to pull up. Naomi nodded and turned the wheel with effort, the wheel was always a little difficult to maneuver.
They parked the gleaming red jeep before a small shop and got out, locking the doors behind them. Together, they rushed in, Aki holding Naomi's hand while Kenji held Nana's, and started browsing the food.
"Mmm!" Nana picked up a large packet of chocolate biscuits, breathing in the mouth-watering, sweet and chocolate-y scent. Whilst on the next aisle, Ayaka had picked up a can of Miso soup, drooling over it as she remembered having it before. With all the fresh ingredients, like tofu and dried seaweed inside as steam wafted from the bowl. It was her and her dad's favorite!
Naomi, however, found some fresh sushi rolls. Her eyes watered, remembering eating salmon, tuna, and shrimp sushi with with her nana. It looked really tastey, and it would also bring back great memories.
"Who likes sushi~?!"
*****
"This is really good!"
Ayaka, Nana, Naomi, Aki and Kenji sat on the floor of an old building at nighttime, eating the sushi Naomi had found - and they were all enjoying it. As they loudly chewed on salmon and fish rolled in rice. Their food (which had been stolen by Nana who took it swiftly and left straight after), did indeed fill them up as they conversed about their family problems.
"My mummy always made a big fuss of me, but now she smokes and it smells," Aki began their conversation. "It clogs my lungs sometimes so she does it outside. I still love her though." He smiled as he remembered when she helped him onto the swing set at the park.
Kenji nodded, as if agreeing. "Yeah, my mummy sometimes smokes. I don't like it..." He trailed off unhappily, hanging his head as he remembered coughing from the rings of smoke she made. Sure, she'd apologize when he burst into a fit of coughs, but she still smoked.
"Well you don't know what it's like to be abused at home and bullied at school!" Naomi blurted out, touched by the subject. She trembled violently, holding on to Ayaka for support who hugged her close.
"We were poor most our lives," Nana said suddenly, being encouraged by everyone's problems they were willing to share. "And our parents were mean. I still hate them." She was lying, there were times when she thought that she truly hated her parents for everything they did, but deep down inside she loved them like she loved Ayaka. Her mother wouldn't hesitate to smile at them, although she forced punishments upon them for no good reason, probably trying to blow off steam on them. She thoughtfully bit into a chocolate biscuit.
There was a peaceful silence for a while as they rested on the cold, hard floor. The building was actually a home. A small house with two bedrooms, and a living room, hallway, and small kitchen. They sat in the dark hallway partially fluorescent with silver moonlight. Naomi shifted from place to place, sniffling gently. She was mumbling words in her sleep. One sounded like noise and Tek and blade. It confused the girls, was she having a nightmare about that hideous monster? Kenji snatched the jumbo shrimp from the sleeping girl's lap and gobbled it down, "NOM." he chewed it ravenously. Ayaka gave him a look.
Then there was an abrupt scratching from behind the door. They all exchanged glances that said, 'what was that?' or 'did you hear that?' Then there was a light 'tap tap tap' against the door again, coming from the living room. The three girls stood up straight in alarm, wondering what that noise could be. Kenji and Aki only kept sitting and exchanged looks.
"What was that?" Kenji suddenly asked, causing the girls to shush him. He frowned, not liking being silenced. Aki held onto Kenji's arm, bottom lip trembling. "Don't be a girl." The older boy teased.
Scrape! Scrape! Scrape!
Kenji shrieked, like a little girl his age would, at the sudden noise. He nearly smothered Aki trying to hold onto him for comfort. As if Aki was a big, fluffy teddy bear.
But no, it couldn't be, Ayaka thought, eyes widening in fear. It couldn't be that thing again! They've driven in the opposite direction for a while! How could she have caught up to them?
But it is.
Tek Tek.
Aki screamed, jumping up from the floor and also startling Kenji in the process. "What was that?!" He yelled as Ayaka and Naomi crept out from the hallway. The living room still had a few furniture in it. There was an old and beat-down recliner, a dusty coffee table with cob webs, and a few chairs scattered around the room.
Nana held onto Aki like her life depended on it, and forced Aki to struggle to breathe again. Kenji followed after the girls. "Wait for me!" Aki called after him, forcing Nana off and bounding after him, the sound of his sneakers on the floor echoing through the house.
"SH!" Ayaka hissed, too late. Naomi screamed to the top of her lungs along with everyone else. Nana ran into the living room, and followed their gaze, her eyes widening with fear.
A sharp scythe was poking through the door which was ajar. It glinted in the silver stream of light as it flooded into the room from outside. A cold, bloodshot eye stared them, seemingly glaring straight through their skulls as they shivered with pure terror. Then, ever so slowly, it lowered the scythe onto the hard wood floor and lightly tapped against it.
Tap...Tap...Tap...
And then, a croaky voice sounded throughout the room, sending shocks of terror throughout their entire bodies.
"Where are my legs?"
