Elise sat on a park bench trying to read, but it wasn't working. She heard the sounds like music around her and couldn't help but listen.
Everything was perfect. Except the fact that she'd been trying to finish the last page of her book for an hour but hadn't been able to concentrate long enough to get to the second sentence.
She sighed. "Well, at least I read the first sentence." She put her head in her hands. She had chores to do and homework and she had to make dinner and get her little brother to bed.
She was still sitting there five minutes later, regretting how much time she'd wasted. Elise decided it was about time she got up and headed home, but as she closed her book and looked around, she noticed something, or rather, someone watching her from a bench across the park.
As soon as Elise noticed him, Jackson put his head down and pretended to read again.
Elise sat back. "Dang, " she thought, "I have a stalker."
Jackson glanced up again only to find her staring back at him. He quickly looked back down. "Cover. Blown." He thought.
For years, ever since he'd moved there in seventh grade, he'd liked her, but she'd never even seen him. Until now. He tried to sneak a peek at her over his book again, but she was already gone. He sighed. "She must've been spooked to discover some guy she probably didn't even recognize watching her."
He bent over, picked a leaf up, and marked his spot in his book with it. As he sat back up, he noticed someone walking towards him. Actually, speed walking would be a better word.
"Oh no," he thought and looked up. It was Elise. Though he'd liked her for years, he'd never even spoken to her once.
"Why the heck are you stalking me, creep?" She said angrily and put her hand on her hip.
"What? I'm just reading a book," he said, shaken from actually having to talk to her.
"No you weren't, you were watching me! I don't even know you!"
Disappointed, he replied, "But we go to school together. I'm in two of your classes."
"Really?" She looked bewildered.
"Yah."
"Huh." She sat down on the bench beside him, a little less agitated. "I guess you do look familiar, but that doesn't explain why you were stalking me."
Jackson sat there, stumped about what to say, but then he decided to tell her the truth. "I've liked you since seventh grade." Just like that, a weight was taken off his shoulders.
Elise looked surprised. "Really?"
"Yah."
"Well then, I'm sorry I never noticed you."
"I'm sorry I never talked to you."
"Well," she said, getting up, "I'd better head home. They'll be wondering where I am." She turned and started leaving.
She stopped and turned around. "By the way, I'll be here again tomorrow." The stars were starting to light the night sky as she walked away.
