7b.1. Article 'the'

Article 'the' disebut juga dengan definite article. Pembahasan mengenai article ini akan dibagi menjadi 2 bagian yak.

1. Penggunaan 'the'

A. sebelum noun yang dianggap unik dan hanya ada 1 di alam semesta; the moon, the sun, the earth, the world, the sky, the stars, the equator

B. sebelum noun yang sudah jelas karena noun tersebut sudah disebutkan sebelumnya, contoh: Yesterday I saw some dogs. The dogs were chasing a cat.

C. sebelum noun yang menjadi definite karena diikuti oleh prepositional phrase / adjective clause. contoh:

- The man in black suit.

- The man whom you met.

D. the + superlative of adjective

contoh: bought the most expensive furniture in this store.

E. the + ordinals >> the first row, the ninth day

- ordinal number bisa disebutkan sendiri tanpa noun

contoh: which one do you want? The eight?

- ordinal untuk bab dalam buku, bisa ditulis menggunakan ataupun tanpa the

contoh: the second chapter atau chapter two

- ordinal pada tanggal dan setelah nama dilafalkan dengan menggunakan 'the'

July 4 dibaca: July the fourth atau the fourth of July

Henry VIII dibaca Henry the Eight

F. the + adjective in a time or space sequence >> the next*, the following, the last*

contoh: A student in the last row was asleep.

*next dan last tidak menggunakan the ketika kata tersebut mengacu pada point of time;

He will give the lecture next week.

He gave the lecture last week.

G. the + chief, principal, main, only

contoh: The chief reason for his resignation was bad health.

H. sebelum adjective yang menyatakan kebangsaan (yang berakhiran -ch, -sh, -se, -ss), kelas/ sekelompok orang secara umum. (memiliki arti plural)

kebangsaan: the Dutch, the French, the Spanish, the Chinese, the Swiss

- The French like to eat well.

kelas/ kelompok: the rich, the poor, the old, the disabled, the unemployed, etc

- the old >> menyatakan golongan orang-orang yang sudah tua

- The poor get poorer, the rich get richer.

*Jika kita ingin mengacu pada kelompok tertentu, maka kita harus menambahkan noun

- The French tourists are complaining about the food.
