He smiled at me, a genuine smile that seemed to light up his whole face, it was such a beautiful smile, that I was transfixed and couldn’t take my eyes off him. No one had smiled at me like that since I was young. People thought that just because I was a boxer, they weren’t allowed to smile at me; but that wasn’t the case at all.
I was so distracted by his smile that I didn’t have time to process what he was doing.
We hit the surface of the water with and audible splash! The water was cold and my lips started chattering as we resurfaced.
Sam resurfaced at the same time. His laughter was ringing through the air as he tread water. Surprisingly, the water was deep in this area.
“Why did you do that?!” I exclaimed, splashing some water at his face. I proceeded to swim back to the grassy bank. “First you tackle me to the ground, then you go and push me into the water! What are you going to do next, drown me?!” I shouted as I hoisted myself onto the bank; I was letting my anger take over, but I just couldn't help it. I had had anger problems ever since my brother left. I stood up once I was back on the ground and tried to dry myself of. “There was no need to do that!” I told him as I untied my hoody from my waist and wring it to get the water out of it. “My clothes are all wet now!” I lay it down on the ground hoping it would dry from the heat of the setting sun. My black vest was sticking to me so I decided to take it off. I turned my back to Sam who was still treading water and began wringing out my vest. I turned to point a finger at him accusingly,“You're lucky I didn't have my phone or anything with me! I could have been electrocuted!” I stopped to take a breath. “Are just going to stay there staring? Aren't you going to say anything?”
I stopped to look at him. His eyes were on me and he had a bemused expression on his face. I glared at him for a long while and he carried on looking, the same expression on his face.
“What?!” I finally shouted, throwing my hands in the air in exasperation.
He didn't answer. Instead, he began swimming towards me. I sat there waiting, my hands on my hips. He reached the bank, got out of the water and started walking towards me. I noticed water was dripping down his face and his shirt was sticking to him, I couldn't deny he looked attractive. “I'm sorry.” He said stopping in front of me. “I didn't think you'd get upset, it was supposed to be a bit of fun...” He trailed off scratching the back of his neck awkwardly.
When he was this close, I felt calm again. He looked at me expectantly and he reminded me of a lost puppy, I just wanted to smile. “Fine, it;s okay...” I mumbled quietly.
He beamed when he heard this and wrapped his arms around me in a tight hug. My body stiffened. This was the first time anyone had hugged me since I was seven. It felt weird to be held protectively in someone's arms. Slowly, I raised my arms to wrap around Sam and rested my head on his shoulder. It seemed to fit perfectly and as he squeezed me against him, I relaxed.
Then I realised what I was doing...
I pulled myself away from him unwillingly, “Errm... your shirt's wet, you might catch a cold.” I stated, distancing myself a little.
He looked down at his shirt, then at me. I felt self conscious of my body all sudden, something that never happened considering I was in great shape. I watched him as he reached for the hem of his shirt then proceeded to take it off. I was slightly taken aback by what I saw. His body was shaped like an athletes, well built, but not too overdone.
“Do you do any sports?” I found myself asking.
He smirked at me, “I'm a runner.”
“But you said you couldn't run!”
