Here We Are Again

by sloanranger

So many years... so many lives,

have we come early or just arrived?

The moon's still here, so are the stars,

destination Jupiter or return from Mars?

Maybe we've made it in plenty of time,

the water's here and that's a good sign.

Polar caps melting, it'll help with acidity,

but still play havoc on coastal cities.

A different planet, a different time,

but same old solar system in decline.

What order now, have government's professed -

International Corporate Congresses?

Are they still fighting, all of their wars -

blowing up everything under the stars?

Yes, I recall, it comes with the pattern,

likely won't change until they reach Saturn.

Warming has started but not yet extreme,

the air is still breathable, so, in-between.

Whether to stay and clean it up fast,

or make preparations to leave that are vast.

They don't know yet the asteroid belt's,

so difficult to cross once heat is felt.

But nothing's impossible - thank Spirit for that,

while visibility remains retrostat.

Recall when we came from Venus, last time?

"They'll do it again," you said, and were right.

"They can't help it," you said, "it doesn't matter;

they're climbing the same, universal ladder.

Their infinitesimal bridge to the stars -

they'll never believe it, not until Mars.

And by that time, most of their crews  -

will think for some reason, everything's new.

We'll tell them of course, it's happened before;

at least twice we know of - before this encore.

From Mercury then Venus, our souls did traverse,

and it's fine as long as we're not in reverse.

But we do the same things over and over –

destroy our home and then start all over.

It's the time that it takes, trillions of years,

for our tiny atoms to traverse the spheres.

But at least and long last - Darling, we're here...

and may I just say,

                                  you look lovely, my Dear.
