Brian's POV

I sat on my bed waiting for Tim to return to me. Who knew what he was doing out there. I had just returned from training my squad. God I feel exhausted. I fell back on the bed just as Tim entered the room.

"Hey didn't expect you to come back early today." He said to me as he placed his gear on the dresser. "How'd the kids do today?"

"Fine that new kid Toby shows a lot of potential." I said as I looked at the celling. When Tim passed me his walkie buzzed and I went to get up from the bed answer it but he snatched it from my hand once I picked it up. "Hey what the hell?"

"It's nothing Brian." He said defensive. I glared at him.

"Who is she?" I asked sternly. He has a cheating problem and it's been with all women since the beginning of our relationship. He is the worst lair I have ever met.

"Stop being so stressed out Brian it's making you irrational." He said as he walked into the bathroom with his walkie-talkie. I sat back down on the bed. Jeff entered my cabin.

"Brian you here?" I heard him call from the living room. I stood up and walked down the hall to him. "There you are. I have a question?"

"You just asked me a question." I chuckled softly. "What do you want?" Jeff was one of my closest friends I knew I could trust him. After all I did train him. He is equal to Tim and I, but it wasn't always that way. Before the fall of the house he was just a regular proxy. Now we three were elites. The fall happened eight years ago. We keep it secret from the other and newer proxies as it is a painful memory for us.

"I wanna take Toby on my hunt tonight. I'm bringing in a new proxy that is around the same age as Toby. He could be useful." He handed me a file. "Kid was adopted by a scientist. He experimented with shit and tonight he's supposed to kill someone to complete his final test." He explained to me. I nodded as I opened the file and looked at it. A young boy it said he was seventeen just like Toby.

"Just keep the kid out of the line of fire. And you know not to engage to early you can't interfere with the master's plan." I said calmly as I handed the file back. He took it from me.

"You okay Brian?" He asked me.

"Yeah yeah I'm good. Just Tim and you know what." I said as I heard Tim leave the bedroom.

"Ah I see that. It seems his 'sickness' will never get better." Jeff said as he watched Tim walk past us to the door.

"I'll be back later Brian." He said before leaving.

"Who is it?" Jeff looked down at me. I was shorter than him. He was also six five so he's taller than most people here.

"I don't know. He snatched his handheld from me earlier when I'm guessing she contacted him. He has always favored and cycled through two different women that are here currently. Natalie and Rouge. It's gotta be one of them."

"Rouge is his protégé. But she's on a mission right now. It's Nat. I think she's just as power hungry as Tim is." He said as he sat on my couch. "Fuck that guy."

"Jeff it's not the simple and you know that. I would have to kill him. He knows the secrets of the forest. He knows my secrets. I've been able to cover up his affairs so far I will keep doing so until I can no longer do so." I said as I walked to the fireplace. On the mantle above the fire was a picture of Tim and I from many years ago. Back when we were just friends. I looked at the aging picture. "Him and I used to be so happy. That was what felt like forever ago." I said as I placed it back down.

"You need to let that version of Tim go. It'll never come back. You also need to realize that he will never love you how you love him."

"I know Jeff. I'm reminded of that daily when he runs off with a woman in the compound." I said in a somber tone. "What am I doing wrong?"

"Nothing he's just a cunt." He said as he propped his feet on my coffee table. "You're the leader here. He just uses you for a power grab. It was never about what he could do for you it's always been what you can do for him." Jeff was right. After he came to the compound he was only interested in me when it benefited him.

"Jeff I'd like to be alone." I said. Jeff nodded and stood up from the couch. He walked to the door and looked at me one time before leaving. I walked to my kitchen and pulled a bottle of liquor from my cabinet and I pulled a blunt from my pocket and went to my room. I sat by the windows and opened it just enough for the smoke to escape. I light the blunt with the lighter from my pocket. Between each puff I took a swig from the bottle. I looked out the window into the trees. "Be sturdy like a tree." I whispered to myself.
