-Trish-
'Where am I?'
I lift my head off of a tiled floor, and look at the unfamiliar surroundings. I seemed to be in some sort of kitchen, with a locked door on every wall. The number 58 lit up on signs above each of the four doors. Random items were scattered all through the room, on the floor, in cabinets, on the counter. I just sat in the middle of the room, taking it all in. I stand up and walk over to the refrigerator. I open it and find nothing inside except a small box with a lock on it. I could try to pick it open, but it looked like a complicated lock, so I decided I would have to find the key instead. While I look for any sort of key or hint to the codes on any of the doors, my mind begins to wander.
'Where am I? How did I get here? Where is Nathaniel? Am I alone here? What's on the other side of these doors? Which is the exit? Were my suspicions correct?'
A man's voice in the ceiling interrupts my thoughts. "Welcome to the Grid. On any side of your rooms you'll see doors and a room number 1 through 100. Somewhere in your room is the code to open all four doors. One of the rooms will contain the exit. It's up to you to find it. When you open a door, you will enter a new room with one of your fellow captives inside. You can be friends and work together, enemies and fight, or just leave each other alone.
"To maximize work time, we've given you a drug to stop the body's need for sleep, so you won't have to waste any precious time on rest. Food will also be scarce, so be sure not to waste any you happen to find. Many of you will die in here, no doubt. Have fun, good luck, and try not to die."
That voice was definitely Kalabar, further confirming everything I thought about him. I had to get out of this place, the Grid, and finally expose what Kalabar has gotten away with for so long. And, most importantly, I must see Nathaniel again.
-Nathaniel-
'Where is she?'
Trish hasn't been answering her phone, which is odd because she usually answers me instantly. I've already texted her three times this morning, and I don't want to seem clingy, but I'm really worried about her.
'What if she was abducted like so many others? No, there's no way' I tried to reassure myself that I was just being paranoid, but it wouldn't be the first time someone I cared about disappeared. But Trish was different than the others, I really loved her, I'd be devastated if she was actually gone. I decided to call her house, maybe her parents know where she is. I punch the number into my cell phone and put it up to my ear. After a few rings her mom picks up.
"Hello? Nathaniel?" she sounded stressed, which worried me more.
"Hi Mrs. Pyne. Is Trish home?"
"Wait, she's not with you?"
"No, she was with me yesterday, but she definitely went home. I said goodbye to her and she walked home" I can tell she's as worried as I am.
"She never came home last night, I just assumed she spent the night at your place."
"Oh no, this is bad. I hate to assume the worst, but I think Trish might have been abducted" I could barely choke out the last few words, and my eyes started filling with tears.
"No" she hardly whispered, I could tell she was very upset and likely crying too.
"Try not to worry Mrs. Pyne, I'll get my father to send out a search for her. He has the power and the money to find your daughter, no matter where she is. I promise we will find her" I wipe tears off my cheeks, and start to walk towards my father's office, still on the phone.
"Oh thank you Nathaniel, thank you so much. Please find her" She was sobbing into the phone.
"I will. I'll call you back when I find out anything, okay?"
"Okay, goodbye."
"Bye bye Mrs. Pyne" I hang up just as I reach my dad's office.
I knock on the door, preparing my words in my head before I walk in. I know he didn't really like Trish, but I'm sure he will help me search for her.
"Come in" I hear faintly from the other side of the door.
I walk in, and I'm given the same sign he usually does when he's on the phone. He just sticks his pointer finger up, and I know to wait and stay quiet because he's talking about 'important work stuff' and can't be interrupted. I nod and sit down on one of the chairs in front of his desk. My dad is always busy like this so I've gotten used to waiting up to half an hour before he gets off the phone. Luckily I only have to wait a few minutes today.
"Uh huh, uh huh. So Monday at 5? Excellent. Okay, see you then. Uh huh, bye" he writes something down on a sticky note, presumably about his plans for Monday. He looks up at me for the first time since I walked in.
"Oh hey kiddo, what's wrong?" He noticed that I had been crying, because my face was puffy and red.
"Trish didn't get home last night, I think she was abducted" I start to cry again, and my dad gets up from his desk to give me a hug. I sob into his shoulder, getting his suit a little wet from the tears.
"Oh no that's absolutely awful!" He hugged me tight.
"I came to ask if you can send out a search party for her. I mean, we have the best police force in the whole world, I'm sure we can find her if we try hard enough."
I was interrupted by one of the servants.
"Sorry to interrupt sir, but your 11 o'clock appointment is here to see you now."
"Aw I'm so sorry kiddo, I have to go talk to this client, but if you write down a note for me I'll get on that as soon as I can, okay?" He turns toward the door to walk to his appointment, too busy to deal with the tear stain I left on his shoulder.
I nod my head and wipe away my tears with my sleeve. "Yeah, okay Dad." I grab a sticky note and write down 'Trish Search ASAP' and stick it on his computer monitor along with all the rest.
I walked back to my room and spent most of the day crying.
'Oh Trish, where did you go?'
-Unknown-
'I'm so glad I stopped that nosey Trish and put her in the Grid when I did. She was too close to exposing me, but now she will die in the Grid and I won't have to deal with her anymore.'
