"For you, who has lived for a millenium, what is your wish?"
~ The Mage of Night
Prologue: The Worries of the Millenium Old Butler...

"Stein, when are you going into retirement?"
Under the bright and warm weather, a startling question shoots directly at me with pinpoint bluntness and accuracy.
"I will eternally serve you, my little lady," I answered the silver haired girl who was nibbling on her cake. She, as the young master had said, was a completely adorable doll and a tsundere.
Instead of throwing a tantrum at my answer as she has always done, she simply mutters, "Aren't you tired of taking care of me?"
"Haruna-sama, I will always be perfectly healthy. Thank you for worrying about me."
"I wasn't worried at all!"
Her cheeks blushed a crimson red and she turned her head away while stuffing her face with more chocolate cake.
Ah, Master, your descendants take after you in the strangest ways. I wonder if Master was also this (idiotically) cute back when she was a child? [Author: Oy, that's rude!]
"Stein? Why don't I have any magical powers like Elveva-nee-sama? And everyone else, why do they always treat me so well? Papa and Mama are so cool and strong. It would be easier to hate them if this was the cliche story of how I was kicked out just because I didn't have any powers," she was truly crying miserably now. She's been fed too many stories hasn't she?
"Haruna-sama, it is not necessary for you to have powers to be happy. Your family loves you for being their little girl."
She retorts with a teary face, "Is my job just to stuff my face with chocolate cake?"
I gently wipe the tears dripping down on the comical face with a warm expression, even though I was ready to laugh at her adorable face. [Author: You're not a sadist and lolicon, right?]
"Haruna-sama, you can eat as much as you like as long as you don't get fat," I flash her a brilliant smile.
Her teary jade eyes stare at me as she sniffles.
"Stein."
"What is it my little lady?"
"You're really rude, you know that?"
"I'll take that as a compliment, Haruna-sama."
"You're really childish despite being over a thousand years old."
"..."
"You're not going senile, right?"
"..."
I clear my throat.
"Haruna-sama."
"What is it, Stein?" She tilted her head in an adorable manner. It was only at times like this that she appropriately used her appearance as a weapon.
"I'll just pretend I didn't hear that," I replied. I pushed up the delicate gold frames of my spectacles and clapped my hands.
"By the way, Haruna-sama, I'm eternally 21."
An eerie silence settled between us as Haruna-sama obediently sat down sipping tea and snacking on sweets.
Was it something I said?

Flashback from 1000 years ago...

"Stein." A silver haired beauty calls out lazily as she sips her cup of tea.
"Yes, Milady?"
"I am going to die tomorrow."
"..." I sigh with a tone of helplessness.
"Master, please do not joke around. Are you not immortal?"
"I'm not going to be immortal by tomorrow."
"..." Master, you're not an idiot right? Idiocy isn't contagious right?
"You were thinking something really rude weren't you?"
"Of course not, Milady," Stein stonily replies, his voice flat and emotionless.
Master wrinkles her brow and sets down the cup of tea.
"Stein, you would forgive me right? No matter what I do?"
"Have I not sworn to inherit your burden, Milady?"
A deafening silence crowded the open space, suffocating the surroundings with bitter tension.
"I am sorry, Stein." Master's heart was on the verge of gentle collapse.
"No matter what, I will always forgive you Milady. Even if it is a thousand years later, I will protect the place you call home."
"Stein, this will be your final order from me." Master rises to her feet, her regal bearing blinding and her beauty even more so next to the stars that fade in her presence. Yet, this image seemed incredibly ominous and a sense of foreboding attacked my senses.
"Tomorrow," She turns to me, her crimson eyes searing into my memories.
"Kill me."
