Kanji is similar to Chinese characters but sound different.
Eg: 海 (Sea)
Chinese pronunciation: Hăi
Japanese pronunciation: Umi

So if you have prior knowledge of Chinese, that will help you a lot.:3

There are a LOT of kanji characters out there so it's not something you can just look up from a chart and memorize. The best is to practice practice practice as you go along.

Additionally, there's Rōmaji. It's the use of the English alphabets to spell out Japanese words. This is mostly used in teaching new learners how to read Japanese.

Eg: Apple
Romaji: Ringo
Hiragana: りんご
Katakana: リンゴ
Kanji: 林檎
