"Thank you so much for the help, Lyn. I gotta go, catch yah tomorrow." Emily sent a friendly smile her way before racing off to the, now currently empty, parking lot. She was a girl on a tight schedule, always having a place to be, always seeming to be late for something. It humored Adelyn. She couldn't begin to imagine how it must be to be so busy there wasn't a time written in the itinerary to breathe. She stood there, watching as the girl she helped tutor every Wednesday scurried off to some important event. With a smile and a slight shake of her head, she began her way to the bus station. Adelyn, unlike the majority of the population that went to Paradise Creek High School, didn't have a mode of transportation aside from the publics excellent busing services. The crusty gummed, week old beer stained seats with company to make any sane person uncomfortable was a nightmare in itself. It sent a worm down her back just thinking of sitting on it for 20 minutes, enduring the wretched smell that came from the driver themselves and the people who surrounded her.
She laughed at how pitiful she sounded, thought to herself to be grateful to even be able to afford to take the Metro, no matter how terrible it was to ride, it could be worse. She wasn't in any position to be complaining about things that helped her everyday, her parents raised her better than that and they would be disappointed with her if they heard her thoughts. Feeling lighter about her situation, Adelyn continued her walk towards the benches she couldn't wait to sit on. With the weather on her side, warmer than usual despite winter creeping it's way into the town, she kept a smile on her face and took her time walking, looking at the people around her. People watching was one of her favorite pastimes. There was something about the difference in movement, the uniqueness to one individual, and the way that they interacted with each other that just completely fascinated her. That's why she was thinking about majoring in Psychology in hopes that maybe one day she would become a Child Psychologist. Adelyn loved being around children and they her, which is why she volunteered at the child care facility down town, well at least she tried to volunteer but they still pay her under the table because she's there constantly. It was one of the major things in her life that was important to her because it was one of the few places where she actually understood who she was, she wasn't just the confused teen who barely had an idea on what to do with her life and she felt like someone who mattered to people. Just thinking about it made her grin, even if there was a small ache in her chest that craved to be there.
Adelyn rounded the corner to her destination, but something was off. It came out of nowhere. With a sudden hit, she felt different. It wasn't because of her pity party or how much she wanted to go to the shelter, no, she felt different. All the hairs on the back of her neck stood high, her survival instincts wired and ready to protect herself. Adelyn turned around, her gold eyes scanning the area for anything that appeared out of place, for anything that didn't feel quite right. She came up empty handed, disappointment flooded her as she realized that the only things around her were cars and empty streets but that didn't seem to help her any. Her stomach went wild, and her heart pounded before she realized that she was probably being paranoid. The days were getting darker and with that, the creeps and perverts slithered behind the shadows, watching and waiting for their next prey. Yet, she still couldn't shake off the feeling of someone watching her, examining her every move. Just to be on the safe side, she opened her phone, opened the call center and proceeded with her walk. If someone did attack her, at least she would have 911 on speaker and an umbrella in her hand to protect herself with. With that thought in mind, her nerves calmed down and she felt a little bit safer on her journey home.

"Mom, dad, your daughter has arrived!" She yelled through the suburban home decorated in fall leaves and acorns. They often went all out when it came to fall but this year they felt like doing something simpler, according to her mom. She didn't believe her, simple wasn't in her mom's nature but she went along with it.
There was movement coming from the living room but she didn't think anything of it, it was most likely the company her family had over, the ones who parked in the driveway. Adelyn shuffled up the stairs to her room; she didn't have a lot of homework that night, she did a lot of it with Emily at the school library but she did have a lot of Stranger Things to binge which obviously held higher priority over anything else.
She entered the blue room, a calm sensation overwhelming her as she threw her shoulder bag somewhere across the room and fell down onto the bed, her feet scraping lightly against the white fur rug. Aside from the daycare, there was no place else she would rather be than here. This was her safe place, her safe haven. That was until her parents occasionally busted into her room and interrupted her peace and quiet. That annoyed her to no end but they were "her parents" and they "owned this house which means they make the rules", something they never let her forget no matter how many times she told them that she wouldn't. It bothered her that they didn't allow her to act like an actual teenager sometimes, they told her that she was 17, that she was basically an adult and that she needed to act like one. Adelyn was close to her parents, that was one thing that was certain, but they didn't understand her need to just be a kid sometimes yet not get treated like one. She sighed, shrugging to herself knowing that nothing will ever change and she best be getting used to it before things become more complicated than they needed to be.
Downstairs Adelyn heard voices being raised, her fathers voice tried to dominate the discussion but then she heard her mom. At this, she sat up straight in a fluid motion and all but ran to her door to get a better understanding of what they were saying. Her mom never raised her voice. She was a calm women who didn't see the need behind being violent or getting worked up over issues that didn't matter.
"I'm going to tell you this once, Parker Williams, so you better fucking listen to me. You have no right to be here, you egotistical asshole, so it's in your best interest to get the hell out of my house right now. I have a shot gun cocked and loaded, and I'll gladly paint a pretty picture on my walls with your blood. You can take that contract and shove it up your ass. Maybe then you'll get a better look it. Do you understand, young man?"
She could tell her mother was fuming, her fingers twitching to get a grip on the gun in the corner of the room. Adelyn's heart felt cold and her hands had begun shaking. She didn't understand what was happening or who this man was for the matter but from what she heard, she didn't think she'd want. The only thing she could think of as to why this man was here was because he didn't like an agreement at her father's law firm. Adelyn backed away from her door and crawled back onto her bed. She didn't hear what his reply was but a few moments later, she heard the front door slam shut. Then it was quiet. No one moved. No one said a word. And that's what scared her the most.
