He was in the lab. Working on a serum that the government wanted.

The world was becoming too crowded. Too fast. At this rate, all natural resources world be gone in the next 40 years. At most.

How the serum worked was simple. It was to be "accidentally" spilled, releasing the viruses in it to the world. After that, it was airborne. They would spill it it a contained area with one person. Predetermined. That would make them ill, giving all the symptoms of the flu. Except one.

Biting.

The predetermined person would bite themselves or scratch themselves. Never others. After about three to five days, they'd go into a deep, irreversible sleep, then die. The disease would have then spread to those taking them out and anyone who they had had contact with. Except he couldn't get it to work like that. He had all the proteins and viruses for dying and spreading, but they also caused nasty side effects. Something more horrific than most can imagine.

"Barlin!" He snapped to attention, for this was his boss, the one who had commissioned him to work on this project."Yes, Dr. Rambowski?"

"Is it done?"

"Almost."

"I need it done now! I promised to have this in by today. Surely it gives the symptoms and spreads the way it needs to by now!"

"Yes, but-"His boss interrupted him. "If it does that, then no further work is needed. The vial?"

Barlin carefully handed him the vial. "Sir, you know if anything goes wrong with this-"

"It will be fine!" Rambowski insisted. "And for your sake, I've given you and your family a bunker. Call me when you've moved and I'll release it. The others have moved already!" He marched off, muttering about how he had wanted this a week earlier.

Barlin sighed and started packing up. At least he had tried.
