Ch. 1 (Baz's POV): In Which Baz Learns Of An Interesting Development

Believe it or not, Penelope Bunce was the first person I told about loving Simon Snow. The second was my younger sister, Mordelia.

I'm still not sure how exactly the Penny thing happened. One day she accused me of it and I confessed, awkwardly, looking all flustered. I thought Penny was going to point that ring of hers at me and cast some impossible spell that would turn me to stone.

Instead, she gave me a hug.

Then I admitted that I was a vampire, so she probably shouldn't do that, and she laughed. "Don't worry Basil, I already knew."

"To both things?" I asked her.

"Yep! Just needed some clarification."

Penelope Bunce is a genius. A bloody genius. Or maybe I'm just easier to read than I previously thought.

We never talk during class, unless we are forced, so when she flies at me out of nowhere at dinner and gives me one of her "I need to tell you something" looks I thought someone had died. Specifically Simon. He wasn't at dinner, I had already scanned the dining hall twice already.

"What is it?" I hiss, trying to keep the worry out of my voice.

"Agatha broke up with Simon," she says, out of breath, I figure she ran all the way to tell me. "Or maybe it was the other way around. I don't know the full story."

"Seriously?!" that was louder than I had expected, a few students turn to look at us.

"Yep!"

I jump to my feet, "Thanks, Penny." Then I race off towards Mummers House as fast as I can without looking like a crazy person, like that's possible.

"You never call me Penny!" is the last thing I hear her say.

As I reach out to open the door to my (our) tower room my heart starts hammering. This is not going as planned, I thought. I was supposed to act cool and flirty and undeniably something or other. I don't know how to do this, it's not like I've had a crush on him for six years. I open the door.

Si--Snow is sitting on his bed, he looks up as I come in. The hurt on his face makes me pause for a second. Agatha did this to him, how dare she.

"You good, Snow?" I ask.

He turns away from me and I sigh, hope he didn't hear that. I get pyjamas out of my wardrobe and change in the bathroom. No, Snow and I never change in front of each other, and I don't think I could handle it.

Si--Snow looks up at me again when I step into the room... He's glaring. I step towards him, knowing that this will probably end in flames, "What in the heck is wrong with you, Snow?" I say, it comes out sweeter than I meant it too, Crowley that was obvious.

"Agatha." he says.

I sit down on the edge of his bed, he watches me, but doesn't retaliate. "What did she do this time?" I ask.

"Broke up with me." he sighs, "fourth time, for your information."

I have to suppress a snort. Snow can be such an idiot when it comes to relationships, that girl has broken his heart so many times that I'm surprised it's still there. She's such a...there's not even an adequate word to describe her.

Snow's looking at me, "Want to hear the full story? It's kinda long."

I flop down next to him, having no idea where this newfound courage is coming from. He flinches a little, barely, but doesn't move away.

"I've got time," I tell him.
