"Well, you all survived the first challenge. Honestly I would have been disappointed if you hadn’t, looking at you Percy.” The happy bubbly voice of Ringmaster rang in the room.
In the corner of the room was a speaker that was far too high for any of us to reach; lucky for ringmaster because I would have smashed that thing completely.
The voice seemed to be surrounding us, as if the entire room was filled with more than one speaker, which was entirely possible. If possible, her little jibe made me hate her even more than I already did.
Luckily I kept my mouth closed; I didn’t need to make the person who currently had control of my life angry.
“Pardon me miss, but do you care to explain where we are and who you are?’ The extremely tall man asked in a calm tone.
“Sorry, no can do Air-Bear, you’ve got to figure that out yourself.” The tall man who she had called Air-Bear looked temporarily stunned. Just for a small second, a tinge of recognition crossed the man’s face.
Just as fast as it had come it was gone, making me wonder if I had ever actually seen it. Before I could think more on it Ringmaster was talking again.
“As a reward for clearing the first puzzle, how about I give you the rules of the game. Throughout the hotel you’re in there are ten doors, nine of which have a random number between eleven and a hundred; the last door holding a ten. You need to seek a way out; find a way to escape the door with the number (10) and you’ll win the game.
“Each door has number painted on it; the scanner next to that door must equal that number. Any number you put in the scanner is irreversible, so don’t mess up.
“All of you have a number that is a certain color imprinted on your hand. That number is the number you put in the keypad. The color on your hand represents the buttons you’re allowed to push.
“For example, since Abel has a red seven, if the door he’s entering only has a red multiplication symbol that’s the only button he can push. If he presses any other color that isn’t red I’ll be sure it’s the last thing he ever does.” She concluded. If you could hear a smirk, I swore she was doing it.
Each of us was silent, waiting on her to continue. After a minute of silence her voice returned, slightly annoyed. “In each of your pockets are hints about the game. I’d advise you read Alice’s first.
Hopefully it’ll add some incentive for each of you to work faster.” With that her voice was gone.
Alice dug her hand deep in her pocket and fished out a note. She read it to herself before her eyebrows rose in surprise.
“What does it say?” I asked impatiently.
“The bombs in your chest are set to explode in five hours. The only way to stop this is to escape, or deactivate it yourself.” She read aloud in a tone that sounded far too casual.
“Well then I suppose we better pick up the pace huh? My name is Aaron, would you all be so kind as to give me your names. We can save some time if we know what to call each other.”
The man Ringmaster called Air-Bear spoke, his voice was just as calm as Alice’s. His partner snickered while giving his partner a knowing smile.
“Man Aaron, nothing ever phases you does it. You literally were just read a death letter and you’re still calmer than me after a lot of scotch.”
The man then shook his head while laughing slightly to himself. I swore I saw the tall man, Aaron, glare at his partner angrily. Just like he did earlier, he quickly changed his expression almost instantly; making me wonder if it was ever there.
