*Anubis POV*
I sat on the small stool behind the large glossy black grand piano in the music room. My fingers grazed the white ivory keys slowly as I played a slow and soft melody as I sang softly
"Hush child everything will be all right
Hush child their is no need to fear
Hush child I will be here
To guide you when you feel lost" I sang softly. I played a bit more, getting louder
"Hush child dry your tears
You aren't alone
Hush child you will be ok
Ohhhhhhh ohh"
"That sounds like a great song" Aunt Marcy said startling me and breaking my concentration "I'm sorry I didn't mean to startle you"
"You're fine. It's something made up, nothing official" I said brushing it off as Jake came running up
"Anubissssssss" He squealed as he hugged me.
"Jakeeeeeee" I said back as I returned the hug
"What are we doing today? " He asked.
"Vell, Ashley said he vas going to make a special video call for you in a couple of minutes and then Maria is coming over for her Horse riding lessons so if you vanted to do that. Does that sound good? " I asked. Get grinned from ear to ear
"It sounds awesome" Jake said happily. He and Maria, ever since Lexi and Maria came back from Mexico two days after Thanksgiving last week, had been inseparable playmates. I didn't know if it was just me but I think jake liked Maria, a childhood crush as everyone called it
"Thanks again for letting Jake stay the night again" Aunt Marcy said "I know how wild and rowdy he can get. I appreciate it"
"Oh no you're fine, Im used to it. It isn't a big deal" I said as I got up, jake grabbing my hand and leading me into the kitchen where I had my computer set up for Jake "hey careful I can't run"
"Sorry. I'm just so excited its been forever since I saw Ashley" He answered
"Aren't you forgetting something?" I asked.
"Oh yeah" He said as his face light up before he raced towards Aunt Marcy and hugged her "bye mommy" He said
"You behave ok, listen to Anubis. Have fun, I love you" She said as she bent down and kissed his head "bye"
And with that she left and jake ran back over, climbing onto the stool just as Ashley's face appeared. Jake had the largest grin on his face I had ever seen
"Ashleyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" Jake squealed happily
"Hey big man what's up? How's my favorite cousin doing? " Ashley asked as he leaned on the desk provided by the hotel. From what I could tell it was pretty nice.
"I'm doing awesome" Jake answered excitedly "we took a field trip to the zoo. It was so cool, I didn't want to leave"
"Really? That sounds fascinating. What was your favorite part? " Ashley asked as I went to go make Jake a sandwich for lunch
"I liked the koalas but I also liked the tigers and lions "
"You know I shook a koalas hand before"
"Really? "
"Yea, he was one chill dude to. He slept like a baby"
"That's silly"
" He was a very silly koala" Ashley said chuckling
"What's your favorite? "
"I don't know I liked it all. I think my least favorite was.... Actually I don't think I have a least favorite"
"What's Anubis's? "
"She doesn't like zoos" Ashley stated. Jake looked up at me and gasped
"Why don't you like zoos? Do you not like Animals? " Jake asked me
"Thanks Ashley, you're so going to get it vhen you get home" I said before I looked up as jake, bread in my hands "no jake I love animals, I love all animals I just think that they shouldn't be put in cramped cages for amusement and that they should be back in there home vhere they are happy and have lots of space and do vhat they vant "
"Oh ok" Jake said before looking back at the screen "it's ok, she loves animals so it's fine"
"Hey guess where I am" Ashley said
"Hmm.... Africa? "
"Nope, I'm not in Africa"
"China. Everything is made in China"
"Nope. I'll give you a hint, it's where Anubis's funny accent comes from"
"Is it Russia? "
"No, but it's close to Russia"
"Scotland"
"Nope"
"I don't know. Where? "
"It starts with a G and end with a Y" Ashley said, trying to help give him a hint
" Germany?" Jake asked with the most confused look on his face.
"That's right. And I got you something really good for Christmas. You have been a good boy haven't you? "
"Yes I have" Jake giggled as I finished making his turkey sandwich and put everything up before putting it on a plate and handing it to jake
"Here" I said m jake looked up at me and smiled
"Thanks. Ashley when are you coming home? I miss you" Jake said. My heart melted in my chest, that was the cutest thing I have ever heard
"Week buddy I won't be back until the end of February" Ashley answered
"But that's so far awayyyyyyy" Jake whined before taking a bite of his sandwich as I went to start making my lunch after I wiped the counter and stove off.
"I know. But I'll go quicker then you think, trust me" Ashley answered
"Can I tell you something. You have to keep it secret"
"Of course"
"Is Anubis there still? " Ashley asked. That caught my attention.
"Yup. She's in the kitchen making lunch"
"Anubis, Mama, my gorgeous girl. Don't take this the wrong way but i need you to give away a for like a few things i have something to tell jake in private" Ashley said
"That's nice. I'm getting kicked out of my own kitchen now. You have three minutes after that I'm coming back in" I said before I walked into the laundry room to get laundry done. I threw Juniper and Jared's clothes into the dryer as I threw my clothes into the washer. I took the basket of towels and began folding them. I was curious on what Ashley was telling Jake and why he asked me to go away
I pushed all negative thoughts out of my head. It was weird for the past week I had been having nothing but negative thoughts out of nowhere. I had just assumed it was part of the hormones seeing that I was practically an emotional mess now and would be for another four months. Fun right. I finished folding the towels just as the three minutes were up and I walked back out to hear both Ashley and Jake laughing.
"It's a secret ok" Ashley said. Jake nodded and smiled
"My lips are sealed" Jake said he did the zipper across the lips thing. I walked to the fridge and scanned the shelves trying to find something to eat because I was starving. All the left overs were gone so that eliminated that option. There was literally nothing to eat until I thought about the waffles in the freezer. I grinned, I loved waffles especially frozen waffles they were so good. Well the blueberry ones anyways and I didn't even like blueberries.
Yup. Definitely hormones. I opened the freezer and grabbed the waffle box before making my way to the couch and grabbing my book. I made a nice comfy spot on the couch and sat down, bundling myself up with blankets and opening the waffles before I started to read while I ate
"Can I ask you a question? " I heard jake ask
"Of course you can"
"Why is Anubis eating a whole box of frozen waffles? " Jake asked "does she normally do that? "
I nearly choked on my waffle ad I heard Ashley laugh
"Keep it down I heard Andy groan in annoyance
" Sorry Mr. Grumpy " Ashley said back to Andy sassily "I don't know why she's eating a full box of frozen waffles. I don't think she's ever done that before" I gasped
"Ashley you should know that I do" I said in horror as I looked over the back of the couch and looked up at him, shaking my head before sitting back down and returning to my book
"I'm sorry baby girlllllll" I heard Ashley call out but I only ignored him and continued reading. "She must be reading"
"Yup" Jake answered quickly before I heard some one knock on the door. Sighing and mentally cursing myself I got up and walked to the door before opening it and seeing none other them Karen
"Hello? "
"Hi it's nice to see you again. It's Anubis right? " She asked. She was jumpy and something was up
"Yes"
"I have a small incident with your dog Icy" She said as she scratched the back of her neck.
"Vhat about her? " I asked suspiciously. I was starting to wonder why it had been quiet around here, Icy was usually a bit noisy I really hoped nothing bad had happened to her
"Well there was a bit of an accident... You see my son ended up stealing your dog so I made him take her back here but when I went to back out to head to work she darted behind my car and I hit her. I'm sorry but... She's dead. My heart shattered into a million tiny pieces and I felt the tears start to line my eyes
" You vhat?! " I shouted angrily. Karen looked a bit startled
"I didn't mean for it to happen, I swear to God" She said, eyes wide.
"Jake stay inside ok. I'll be right back" I said as Berlin stood next to me and growled "take me to her now"
"It's this way" Karen said quietly as she began to walk. I followed her in silence as I shut the door behind me, Berlin walking next to me. It was only a couple of minutes before we arrived at her house, similar to mine. Icy laid on the ground behind a red Mercedes, just like she said as a young boy maybe thirteen stood above her just staring.
Tears streamed down my face as I got down on my knees and leaned over Icy's body. My hands shook as I rested my hand on her soft black and white fur and buried my face in hey neck, kissing the side of her head. I cried for ten minutes straight as Berlin whined and tried to nudge icy up. But she laid limp on the ground
"Geez lady get a hold of yourself, it's just a dog" The boy said. My head snapped up as I glared at him with so much hate. Words couldn't even describe how pissed I actually was
"Frank" Karen gasped in shock which had almost sounded fake to me
"No, don't tell me to get over it. This vas not just a dog she vas my family she meant the vorld to me, I've had her since high school vhen she vas just a puppy. It may seem like a dog too you but it isn't I loved this dog so much, but you vouldnt understand that, and none of this vould have happened if you hadn't stolen my dog in the first place and ve vouldnt be in this situation at all" I snapped as more tears ran down my cheeks as I got up slowly
"Here let me help you get her home" Karen stated as I began to pick up Icy.
"No, just don't." I snapped as I held Icy's limp body in my hands before I walled back home Berlin close behind me. When I got there Lexi's car was parked out front. I guess Lexi got here I thought but I didn't care about that right now I had a dog to bury. It took me a second to open the door before slamming it shut
"Careful Anubis, don't break down the door or anything" Lexi called out teasing. Normally i would have laughed but I wasn't in the mood at all. I walked in to see Maria on the couch with a book and Lexi sitting next to her "what's wrong with icy?" She asked as everyone looked at me, including jake and Ashley.
"Ashley" I said, my voice breaking a bit "vhere are the shovels? "
"There in the stables. Why? " He asked.
"Oh no.... What happened? " Lexi said catching in and putting two and two together.
"The neighbors son thought it vas ok to steal someone's dog and the mom hit Icy... Now if you'll excuse me i have to bury my dog" I said as my throat got heavy. Fighting back tears I headed outback, past the pool and towards the stables. Coco and Shadow were asleep as I tried my best to carry the shovel before I walked towards the garden. I gently laid icy down and found a spot to start digging. I looked over to see Berlin had laid next to icy with a sad look on her face as she whined. Berlin and Icy were close as dogs can get, what would you expect from dogs who were raised together
My hands gripped the shovel and I continued to dig. It took all I had to not cry again
"Do you want me to do that? " I heard Lexi ask from behind me as I was halfway done
"It's fine, I got it " I said almost quietly
"Are you sure? " She asked. I turned at looked at Lexi, seeing Jake and Maria with her.
"I appreciate the offer, I really do but I can handle it. Besides you have somewhere to be" I said as I turned and continued digging. I heard Lexi sigh
"Behave alright. And help out Aunt Anubis when she needs it ok" Lexi said to Maria
"Yes mama" Maria answered
"Bye sweet heart" Lexi said before I heard footsteps head off back towards the house. After an hour or so of digging I finished.
Climbing out of the hole I walked back over to Icy and picked her up, after wrapping her in a blanket, and carefully put her in the grave. I grabbed the shovel and began to fill the hole again. I watched as the dirt slowly covered up her body until it was filled
"Good bye girl, I'll miss you" I said quietly as I looked at the grave, telling myself that I needed to get headstone. Maria put a small bouquet of flowers on her grave as Jake hugged me as best he could
"Don't worry Anubis, icy is in a better place now. She's in doggie heaven with Buster" Jake said
"I know what will make you better, a tub of ice cream and a bunch of movies just minus the wine. I see mama do this all the time and I've only been with her for a week " Maria said as she took the shovel and set it against the bench before she grabbed my hand and led me back into the house where she set me down on the couch and walked into the kitchen.
I watched as she grabbed a stool and got a bowl from out of the cabinets and put the stool back. She grabbed a spoon and walked over to the freezer and grabbed the ice cream tub before walking back to the counter and making a huge bowl of ice cream. I turned back around and smiled, that was probably the cutest thing I have ever seen a seven year old do in my entire life.
Jake grabbed the TV remote and turned the TV on as Maria walked back over and handed me the bowl.
"Thanks" I said quietly as I took it before she curled up next to me
"What movie do you want to watch? " Jake asked
"Vhat ever you vant to vatch " I said as I ate the mint chocolate chip ice cream. It was my absolute favorite ice cream. Jake ended up putting on the lion King before he, like Maria also, curled up into my side before he finally just laid across my lap.
But despite the movie, and the four hours of movies after that came after it and eating a whole tub of ice cream, I was still sad. Maria and Jake had fallen asleep and I was careful not to wake them as I went to make dinner seeing that I had to drop them off at school in the morning. Greta had gone on another college field trip but this one was over night and Juniper was at the studio and Jared was at his grandparents seeing CC's family hadn't met Jared yet.
As quietly as I could I made tacos because that was the easiest thing to make at this point. But unfortunately I failed at the being quiet part and both Jake and Maria woke up just as I was almost finished. I made their plates before I made mine and washed the dishes.
"Why aren't you eating with us? " Maria asked.
"I'm just going to finish the dishes and then I'll eat" I said. Jake continued to eat as he and Maria talked. After finishing the dishes I ate and put the rest of our dishes in the dish washer and turning it on. Soon it was eight and I put Maria and Jake to bed across the Hall from my room in case of emergencies. I curled up into bed and Berlin curled up beside me, as if to comfort me. I gently petted her as I cried Silently to myself.
Most people wouldn't understand why I was crying. I always had a better relationship, a better bond, with animals then I did with people. I practically raised icy with a puppy, she was two and a half years old. And some asshole thought it was ok to take my baby and get her hit by a car. I couldn't fix that whole in my heart and I probably wouldn't for a while
