Aveline walked down the hallway, her gait slow and dragging. She had her head lowered, watching her high top converse drag across the floor tiles. Aveline was relieved that it was her last class, but she didn't not want to go back to her dorm and see Nora again. Not after what had happened this morning. She was sick to the stomach just thinking about it, and what would Alaric say? The last thing she needed on top of a boat load of homework was...
Suddenly, Aveline felt her head hit into a hard surface, and heard a couple loud thumps and a flutter of paper falling to the ground. She looked up to see a pair of medium grey, white flecked eyes, fixed in a soft, oval shaped face, with glowy light grey skin.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" Aveline bent over and rushed to help pick up the girl's books and paper's.
"No, no, it's okay," the girl spoke in a breathy voice, her face darkening slightly, "I can get it, don't worry about it. I don't want to make you late for class."
"Please," Aveline handed her the heavy pile of textbooks and papers, "It was my fault, for not looking where I was going," the girl's hands brushed against Aveline's. She looked down, and once again, the world was warm. Every thing was saturated. It was like she was touching Alaric again. Aveline pulled her hands away. No. She was not going to love anybody else. No one except Alaric. No matter how they made her feel or what they made her see. She had pledged herself to him, and him only. Aveline's eyebrows lowered slightly, and her lips tightened. She glanced up at the girl's face, to see and overwhelmed expression. "I'm sorry," Aveline whispered in a brittle, tremulous voice, "I-I have to go," her eyes began to sting. Aveline turned to go, but a hand grabbed her angular shoulder. Once more, the world became bright. She grabbed the girl's wrist, and whirled around.
"At least give me your name before you go?" The girl winced, and gave a small groan under her breath.
Aveline's brows furrowed as she heard the sound, and her mind raced for a miniscule moment, as she pondered why it had been uttered. Suddenly, something in her thoughts clicked. Aveline turned around the girl's wrist.
"What are you doing!" The girl said with clenched teeth, as she attempted to pull herself out of Aveline's grip.
Aveline tugged the girl's sleeve up and, lo and behold, there was an exact replica of the scars on her wrist. "No," she whispered under her breath, "No, no, no," her eyes and voice became wet "no, NO!" This was not okay. This could not be her second soulmate. She didn't want a second soulmate! It was like what kept happening between her and Alaric, before he died. What still kept happening today.
The girl's voice was hoarse, and it shook, like a string being continuously plucked. She yanked her wrist away, and pulled her sleeve down. "I didn't make those. I don't know where they came from. My parents told me it had something to do with soulmates," she inhaled deeply, and continued to speak, her voice a bit less shaky, "Now tell me your name, please."
"Aveline. My name is Aveline," her voice was taut, and monotone.
"My name is Elani-"
"Great. Now can I please go?" Aveline deadpanned.
"Fine. If we can meet up later," Elani pulled out a paper and pen, "and if I can get your number."
"Ugh. Okay, fine."

Aveline dropped her bag down by the door with a sigh, and plopped down onto the bed, yanking her converse off, and walking over to the mirror. "Alaric." She placed her hand on the mirror, looking at the reflection of her late boyfriend.
His eyes scanned over her, checking that she was okay, "Aveline. I got more cuts on my wrist yesterday."
Aveline glanced down, trying to occupy herself with the the details in the carpet. She knew he was going to be disappointed in her. Everybody always was.
"Ave, you need to get help, find some way to stop!" She could see his motions get more frenetic in the mirror, "You can't keep living like this!"
"Alaric, I can't live!" Aveline threw her arms up in frustration, "I just want life to be over, so that I can see you again!"
"You can't do that, you can't just cheat your way out of things," Alaric spoke in a calm voice, trying with all of his might to persuade Aveline.
"Yes I can Alaric!" She sobbed, with wet anger, "I'm inches away. Everything would be fixed if I just shoved a couple bottles of pills down my throat!" Aveline turned away, so that she couldn't see, or hear, Alaric anymore.
She walked over to the bathtub, and turned on the water. Hot tears streaked down her cheeks as she closed the drain, and began to take her clothes off. Aveline pulled her shirt and pants off, a lump beginning to form in her throat. Her bra and under wear dropped the floor, and she stepped into the water, not caring if it was too hot. Aveline leaned her back against the cold wall of the tub. She picked up her razor off the side of the tub, watching as ruby droplets made ripples in the water.
