When All Else Fails

I looked out at the ocean watching the sun setting in the horizon, trying to push the tears that were filling my eyes back. I sniffed and sat down on the rock really close to the ocean wishing the tide would come in and pull me away with it.

“Pretty girls shouldn’t be allowed to sit by themselves. It makes us single guys think that they are available and I don’t need another black eye from another jealous boyfriend.” I heard a voice say from behind me.

“I-I don’t ha-have a boyfriend any-y-more.” I choked out.

“Anymore? Some douche bag was insane enough to dump a girl li-” He cut off when I turned to face him.

We gasped simultaneously. It was my boyfri- ex-boyfriend’s best friend. “Serenity?” He said at the same time I whispered his name, “Damien?”

We stood there and stared at each for the longest time before I took off back up the rocks, running for my life, away from the one thing I couldn’t get rid of that reminded me of Fallyn. I ignored him as he screamed my name. It was useless running away though, because I got about five feet off of the rocks and he caught up to me and grabbed me around the waist. I should’ve known that it would be useless because he is the best batter on our baseball team, scored the most home runs.

“Let me go” I begged.

“Wait I need to talk to y-”

“LET. ME. GO.” I screamed, tears rushing down my face as I yanked myself out of his grip and started to turn away from him.

He looked at me shocked, “I … I just wanted to give you this.”

He held up a ring and I knew it was Fallyn’s class ring. “You dropped it.”

“I don’t want it. He doesn’t want me to have it anymore anyways” I replied.

“Doesn’t want..?” He looked at me like I was crazy, “Do you have any idea what happened?”

“Yeah, he cheated on me with Brittany Gordon and got drunk and got behind the wheel. I know ALL about it. Give the ring to her.”

“Sere, that’s no-“

“Don’t call me that!” I screamed, “Don’t talk to me!”

As I ran away from him I thought I heard him whisper, “But I need you..”
