I thought the dictionary definition of the word "Axis" was literally "enemy".
Background: I've been unusually interested in both history and reading (more so than my peers in any grade) since I was little, and so I naturally encountered a book that mentioned World War II. I knew what "Allies" meant from prior reading, but I was in kindergarten, so I had no definition for "Axis". I showed my mom the book and asked her, and she, using context-specific words, produced the definition "enemy".
