Peril felt terrible. The only dragon she could EVER BE WITH (CLAY of all dragons!) had rejected her SO HARD, and now she wanted to scream, THE WORLD IS AWFUL GO AWAY CLAY HATES ME I HATE MYSELF WHAT DID I DO WRONG????

Clearly, Clay doesn't know what he's missing. Her mind said in an optimistic tone. Peril shook it off. Who else could like her? She sadly walked out of the chamber, into one of the classrooms. A few dragons were in the room-- most of the Copper and Quartz Winglets. Ooh! And was that Turtle, one of her actual FRIENDS, (unlike CLAY) the dragon who helped her kill Scarlet? Peril strolled over to Turtle, trying to act casual. She wouldn't let Clay ruin her day (OH! That rhymes! She realized)

Turtle looked up from a scroll.

"Peril, hey," He began, fumbling to tie the scroll again. "How are you?" Peril hesitated. Should she lie, or tell the truth? On the one talon, Turtle was her friend. On the second talon, so was Clay. On the third talon, lying would make her feel angry. On the fourth talon... Lying was better.

"Oh, I'm okay!" She said a little too loudly. He raised an eyebrow, causing Peril to panic. What if he knows I'm lying?!

"Oh, cool."

"Yeah."

"So, uh... Are you going to ask me how I am?" Turtle grinned. Peril felt... happy, again. She didn't need Clay. This dragon could joke, make her feel special, and the only dragon who she KNEW didn't think she was a monster.

"Uh, yes! How are you, weird little SeaWing?"

"Awful," He began, shaking his head. "Once I heard what happened." Peril cocked her head, confused. "I could hear your conversation. With Clay, I mean." He confessed. She tried to act shocked, but deep down, she wasn't.

The two of them had spied on Queen Ruby not too long ago, so it made sense that the animus SeaWing had heard her.

"I'm sorry, Peril," Turtle said.

"It wasn't you who said that!"

"Maybe not, but I care about what you feel. Are you okay? You just had your heart broken! Big time."

This made Peril realize he was correct. Her heart WAS broken, shattered, even. But what really surprised her was that he cared enough to ask her if she was alright. Peril sat down on the cold stone floor.

"I-I-I'm not okay." Peril admitted. "He was the only dragon I could be with, and he doesn't love me the same way!"

"Well, he's not the ONLY dragon," Turtle began to smile.

"Um, yes he is! FIREPROOF scales, remember? I have FIRESCALES for crying out loud! I can hug only HIM!" She nearly roared.

"Do you know an animus that can enchant himself to be fireproof?"

She knew what he was hinting at. With Clay out of the way, Peril could feel something warm and fuzzy down in her. It made her feel happy, that someone would change themselves for her.

"You... you love me?"

"Of course I do, Peril!" He screamed. "You have powers like mine, are scared of them, and just want to be understood! Peril, we can love each other." Peril was flustered.

"You really do? I mean, really, really, REALLY love me? Enough to use your dangerous magic to change yourself?"

"Yes, Peril." Turtle blushed hard.

"I... I love you too, Turtle."

* * *

Turtle was about to do his spell. It would be life-changing. It would make Peril happy.

"Are you sure you don't want to change me?" Peril asked.

"I love you the way you are. Unless you want to be normal?"

"Not really... But could you enchant an earring just in case?"

"Of course."

"I enchant this earring to make me immune to fire-- fireproof -- when I wear it." He muttered. They were in Peril's personal cave. There was no bedding at all, just a cold, rocky floor. "I also enchant this other earring to disable Peril's firescales when she is wearing it. Also, make it fireproof." The spell had been cast. Turtle looked dazed, tired, and even a little nauses.

He handed her the golden earring, engraved with a little "p". His had a small "t" on it, showing it was his. Peril slipped it onto her ear. She felt the same. Turtle cautiously poked Peril. He had no earring on. He wasn't burning.

"It worked! I'm normal! For REAL this time!" Peril gasped. No loyalty spell, only the love Turtle felt for her, and the love she returned.

"Take it off so I can see if mine works." She did, and Peril gave Turtle a hug. He was fine! Peril folded her wings around him, nearly crying.

"Clay never would have done this for me." She realized.

"Would you like me to get you some bedding?" Peril nodded.

"Please." She slipped her earring back on. Peril could finally be normal, without an extra spell embedded in the enchantment. It was wonderful, being normal.

I can be like everyone else now. And the only dragon I want to be with is Turtle.
