How to NOT Mary Sue #1: OC Name and Nickname/s

The title is kinda already pretty obviously, yeah I'm going to give out advice about OC names, you may think it's stupid, but really names are also important as to giving an image to your OC.

So first let me just quickly create an Mary Sue OC name.

Yeah you see, these type of names can exist. Oh, here's another example.

Jane Potter

Okay so, let me explain what's wrong with these two names.

Well the first one is kinda simple, the name is too long and like who names their child Diamond??? I know some people do have quite long middle names, but that's SOME people. I don't mind your OCs have a few middle names but don't make this a common thing. The second one is Mary Sue mainly because, the last name is Potter. I mean I have no problem with that surname, but it does become a problem when you're doing a Harry Potter OC. Related to a major canon characters is quite cliché.

Middle names. Yes some people have 3 some people have 1. Typically you should just try to have most of your OCs have only 1 middle name, not often will people have multiple middle names. Obviously some character can have more than 1 but this shouldn't become the norm.

Also with nicknames, it's the best to also provide a reason why your OC's nickname is that in the nickname section or in the backstory section. If you just gave your OC a nickname without providing a reason, it does get strange, except if it's really obviously, eg. Breana's nickname is Bre, this is kinda self explanatory.

So here are some advice when choosing a name and nickname/s for your OC:

1. Don't have the same last name as a canon character (usually applies to being related to canon character)

2. Don't have an extremely rare name unless there's a reason, if your parents are eccentric then maybe you can have an exotic name, but still that doesn't mean you go full out and name your OC the strangest name.

3.Have your name give some information about your OC, names do have meanings. Maybe it's because your parents like the sound of it or something, just anything.

4.Have your OC's name be related to their ethnicity. Don't name your OC Johnny if he's Japanese or something like that. This can be an exception, like he is in a foreign country so he uses a different name or maybe he's mixed blood so he might have an English name but Japanese last name, etc.

5.Give a reason to why your OC's nickname is so, unless it's really clear.

Yeah that's about it, thinking of a name may sound simple, but it can be hard when you're considering these things. Hope this chapter will help your OC improve ^~^
