Missing in Action

I'm Sorry

I was speechless. What do you say to someone you are still in love and haven't seen for years?

I stood paralyzed. I felt tears forming and I wasn't gonna try to stop them. He slide his thumb across my cheek, the tears vanished. He pulled me closer, resting his forehead on mine. "I've missed you."

"I've missed you too." I could barely say those words without crying even more.

He gave me a long, slow, passionate kiss. His taste was so familiar, mint and hints of cigarettes. His cologne filled the air. I had to stop. This was wrong. "Harry-"

"Shhh, I know. I have so much to explain and I'm sooo sorry, Audrey." He caressed my cheek, wiping tears with his thumb. "I'm such an asshole. I thought we could talk about it here and maybe get something to eat. We could go to the little Italian place you love so much and-"

"Harry. I can't."

"Well it doesn't have to be there. We can go anywhere or nowhere. I-"

"No I can't. Harry, I'm so sorry. I tried waiting for you, I really did but then that letter came and I was so upset and was lonely and I just met him and-"

"Wait what? What letter?"

"I received a letter saying you were missing in action."

"When?" You could tell he was pissed off. He let go of me and was staring intently.

"About 6 months after you left. Harry, that's what I don't understand. What happened?"

He let out a big sigh and sat on a tree stump, before putting his head in his hands. "I left the army. About 6 months after I started. I couldn't do it. I thought I could, but I couldn't. So I ran away. I tried so hard, but the thought of coming back to you and being home was so tempting. So I left in the middle of the night. I didn't tell you or contact you, because I didn't want anyone to know. I was so embarrassed."

"Harry, there's nothing to be embarrassed about. It's just that..."

"What?" He stood up, getting closer to me again.

"I'm so sorry, Harry, but I have a boyfriend."

We stood there in silence. I closed my eyes. Relief and stress somehow taking over my body. I didn't want to see his expression. I was afraid. I told him I would wait for him. But what was I supposed to do? I thought he was gone.

My thoughts were interrupted. "What? Ho-how? When? Who?"

"Harry, relax. I-I"

"Relax? Relax?! How am I supposed to be relaxed? Audrey, the only thing I want in the whole world, someone else has." He grabbed my face and pressed his lips onto mine, roughly, but passionately. This is wrong!

I pushed him off of me. "Harry! I told you, I have a boyfriend!" I was yelling now.

"You didn't seem to mind it a few minutes ago. Tell me, look me in the eyes and tell me you don't love me and Ill walk away."

"Harry, I can't do that." I looked at the ground, tears about to pour out.

"Because, you're still in love with me, Audrey. Just admit it. This guy, whoever he is, he doesn't make you feel the same way I make you feel. He doesn't love you like I do." He kept wiping the tears from my face, comforting me.

"Harry, it's too late. I can't break Sean's heart. I can't do that to him."

"But you're mine."

"Not anymore, Harry. I'm so sorry." I tried to reach out to him. He turned away, pulling out a lighter and a cigarette. "Please, don't be mad."

"I'm not mad. I just need a minute." I'm standing there, watching him take long drags of the cigarette. "You should go." Those three words broke my heart.

"Harry-"

"Ill talk to you later." I stared at him for long time, before turning to leave. I kept my tears in until I was out of hearing distance. I found a tree about ten minutes away from where Harry was. Sitting down, I cried my eyes out, eventually falling asleep.

I woke up, forgetting where I was. I checked my phone. 3 missed calls from Sean, 2 from Harry, and 7 from my mother. 13 texts, I didn't even bother to look at them, yet. It was 7o'clock. "Shit."

I stood up off the ground, brushing the leaves and dried mud from my clothes. I recalled what had happened, just a few hours ago. Harry. Sean. How could I face either of them again?
