Tick. Tick. Tick. She couldn't help but hear the clock tick. Out of all of the noises, the clock tick was the loudest.
Tick. Tick. Tick. The bird in the cage was chirping, singing a peaceful song.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
"Is there something wrong?" Beatrice asked. "You look upset."
"I'm fine." Corliss said. "No. . ." She put her hand to her forehead. "I'm not! We've done this before!"
Tick. Tick. Tick. The birdsong slowed.
Beatrice frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Déjà vu!! I'm having some serious déjà vu!!" She panicked, looked around, looking around for any bit of proof that they had had this conversation before. She pointed to the large golden stand and bird cage by the window.
"Bird."
Beatrice nodded. "Yes, Corliss, that is a bird."
"That's not what I mean!" Corliss shouted angrily. "I mean we've done this before! You have a green seven! You're going to put it down and say call uno!"
Tick. Tick. Tick.
"Well I was, but not anymore I guess."
Corliss looked at the bird cage and back to her friend. "Your bird is going to die."
"What?"
Tick. Tick. Tick. The birdsong stopped.
Corliss pointed at the cage. "Go check, it's not singing anymore."
Tick. Tick. Tick.
Beatrice looked at her skeptically, but got up and went to the bird cage. She poked her fingers through the bars and gently checked her feathered friend for a pulse. She took in a sharp breath and looked back at Corliss. "How did you know?"
"I told you." Corliss explained slowly. "We've been here before. Soon, the ticking will get faster and the ground will start to shake."
Tick tick tick tick tick tick tick. The ground slowly began to shake, responding to its cue.
Beatrice searched in panic, trying to find something that will hold still in case of disaster. "This is just an earthquake, we need to get to cover, protect our heads, protect the noses of our necks. . ."
"You don't believe me." Corliss realize. "You're not even trying to humor me."
Tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick. Beatrice kept searching in panic, her eyes eventually landing on Corliss and seeing no escape. "Of course I don't believe you."
Tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick. The ground shaking faster, things were beginning to fall.
"How can you not believe me?" Corliss asked. "I predicted the future!"
Tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick. The bird cage and stand was shaking with the ground before it fell on Beatrice's foot.
"OW!!!"
"How can you not believe me?!"
"Don't jut stand there!! Help me!! My foot it stuck!!!"
"Answer me first!!!"
"Corliss for god's sake you damn idiot you did not predict the future!!!"
Tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick. A crash came from outside.
"Let me explain!!" Corliss begged. "Please I'm trying to save you!!"
"You can't save me there is nothing to save me from except this bird cage on my damn foot!!! You cannot predict the future you just had a little bit of dumb luck!!!"
Tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick.
A final crash, and Beatrice screamed.
