"Rome! Rome! Rome!"
Corliss awoke to the sound of chanting. Something about Rome. Wasn't Rome a city in Italy?
"Rome! Rome! Rome!"
It sounded like hundreds of people, maybe even thousands. That made no sense, she was in a closet.
Corliss stood, grabbing on to the hem of an old dress to stand. When she saw she was not alone, she almost died of fright.
"This isn't good." Said the man, who appeared to be in his early twenties, with shadows under his eyes, his wrists and ankles wrapped with yarn as he sat at a wooden table and chair in the back of the closet, is hands intertwining as they moved along, weaving a cat's cradle.
"Rome!! Rome!! Rome!!" The chanting grew louder, but Corliss could not identify its source.
"Very not good." The man sighed. "Very not good."
"Rome!! Rome!! Rome!!"
"You can't stay here." The man told Corliss. "I am not allowed company. I guess I'll push you."
"Rome!!! Rome!!! Rome!!!"
"Push me?" Corliss asked. "What do you mean?"
The man pulled a colorful string from the cat's cradle with one finger until it could not go any farther without removing the circulation from his hand.
"Rome!!! Rome!!! Rome!!!"
The man stared at Corliss with his dark lidded eyes slack. He twisted the colorful string until it could not bare the strain. He let go, letting it loop back gracefully to its original position.
"ROME! ROME! ROME!"
The world began to fade in front of Corliss's eyes.
"ROME!! ROME!! ROME!!"
"This is not good bye." Whispered the man.
Corliss looked at the string in the cat'a cradle, and realized the voices were coming from there. "What are you do-?"
"ROME!!! ROME!!! ROME!!!"
The man smiled, a sad, lonely smile. "I'll see you in your nightmares."
