In a proper fraction the top number (numerator) will be smaller that the bottom number (denominator). In the example above two is the numerator and seven is the denominator. The line in the middle is known as the vinculum. The line means to divide. So this fraction means two divided by seven which is 0.28571428571. Fractions are part of a whole.
