I've been mistaken as a boy for as long as I could remember. I'm not just talking about a few people, I'm talking about teachers, classmates, and even my own mother at times. My mother suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, and though it's not as bad as it used to be; you can tell that the grief is still lurking within her. We use to be a perfect family, like the ones where you see in movies and books. One happy couples, along with two children, one girl, and one boy. I was the girl, but was always mistaken as a boy because of how I dress, talk, and even the slightly messy placement of my short hair. Sadly, that beautiful picture perfect life was now burned to its ashes now. On top of that, I had problems with gender identity and just... Identity itself, but someone later changed that. I'd wish that I'd known sooner, so I'll tell you my story.

I remembered that day ever so vividly. I saw flames, ashes, smoke. I heard my mother's cries and I woke up in shock in the middle of the eerie darkness. In a blink of an eye, I was standing in front of my no longer standing house, drenched in my own tears along with my mother's who was holding me close to her chest while she cried her eyes out into my shoulder. Maybe it was the god's tears, maybe they pity me, maybe they're laughing at me from above. Whoever it is, whatever it is, it's all in the past. We've done a lot healing since that dreadful day. My older brother and my father was gone now and no one can change that fact. I've learned to accept that.

"Attention students! Would you please direct your attention towards the front of the room please", My head jolted up as I heard the booming voice of my Language Arts teacher. "I want you all to welcome Mel Evans to Phoenix Dawn High school! We hope that you'll welcome her as one of your classmates for the start the second semester. Now Iso, would you mind raising your hand for Mel so she knows where to sit please?" I quickly raised my hand as Mel gracefully breezed by, sitting in the desk in front of me. I immediately noticed the sweet fragrance that she gave off, along with her silky shoulder length hair, and just overall perfect looking, blonde hair, blue eyes, slim, healthy skin tone, fit body, and average height. Everything about her was just... perfect. The perfect lady. At that moment she kind of reminded me of myself in a way. I was nothing like a proper stereotypical girl. I do everything that they consider masculine. I wear most of my older brother's old clothes (which I have to say, he had great taste in the area guy fashion), I play sports, sit like a guy, talk around guys, and hang around guys. Of course my guy friends still don't understand that I'm a girl (or they just won't accept the fact that I am), and if I tried to tell them, they'll just laugh and ask me if I've been watching too much after school drama TV or something like that. My head jolted up again as I heard the sweet sound of the bell. Thank god lunch was next because I really need help with my Language Arts narrative essay. I sighed and was glad that class was over. Then I looked up and saw my Language Arts teacher and Mel standing right in front of my desk.

"So Iso, may I have a word with you?", he said in a melodic voice. "Um, yeah... sure. I guess", I said shuddering at the thought of my teacher scowling at me over my last test grade. "Well actually, two things I'd like to talk to you about", he said "Firstly, great job on that reading test! You got the highest score of all of my periods, and I truly am fascinated with your work!", he said with a bright smile. "Uh. Thanks!", I said with an awkward smile. "Secondly, because you got the highest score, I think that you'll be the perfect candidate for teaching Mel the ways of this school. I'm sure there's plenty of exploring to do around here so do you mind showing her around after lunch? I'll give you two a hall pass. Since this is her first day, make sure to let her sit with you at lunch. Any objections?". "Well, um...", I began "GREAT! Have a nice day you two! Welcome to Phoenix Dawn!", he cheerfully said while quickly walking out the classroom.

"Um. Hi.", I said awkwardly "I'm Isonia Sergate, but everyone calls me Iso and mistakes me for a guy. Are you enjoying your stay at Phoenix Dawn?". Of course, I was given the silent treatment. Then before she could say anything about how weird I look or start laughing hysterically on how I dress and such, I changed the subject "So um... the cafeteria is this way! Um... let's go before the lines get big! I mean they get VERY long in a short amount of time! Let's go!" I said in this awfully rushed, awkward, and try-to-be-welcoming voice. Trust me, I have nothing against her, I'm just a little antisocial and awkward when it comes to meeting new people. This is partially why I have very few friends to even begin with. Mel again, says nothing and followed me to the cafeteria in silence. When we got there, the line had already built up. I let out a groan of agony, wondering whether lunch would be over by the time I got my lunch.
