I crumpled to the floor.
My vision was blurry and dancing, spinning around the room like a Merry-Go-Round. My stomach did jumping jacks. I couldn't tell left from right.
Everyone was staring at me in shock, wondering what happened. I myself didn't know. The only thing I was aware of was the red slowly soaking my shirt, darker near my ribs.
A loud bang erupted from nearby. It sounded familiar. Small children huddled together in shock and fear, their faces a mixture of surprise and confusion. I wanted to go over and comfort them, but a sudden and heart-wrenching pain fell into place, just after another bang.
My mouth fell open. Everyone in the mall was looking at one another. Quiet chattering rose from around me. My ears felt like they were stuffed with cotton, the voices seeming slurred and faded. Every nerve in my body screamed for me to get out, but I was frozen in place.
Red lights flashed from above. Madeline gripped my arm, supporting me and calling my name. I looked into her blind eyes, seeing the fear and confusion in them. "What's going on, Ellen?"
I grimaced.
That was the last time I saw her.
I didn't remember much after that, but I wished I spent more time with her. She had always been there for me, through thick and thin; she had helped me through my first breakup, talked me out of dying my hair green—she was always there for me.
The lights of the room fluttered on. My mother leant over me, her cheeks pink. "Wake up, Ellen. You've been asleep for long enough." She smiled, obviously exhausted. "Welcome back to the land of the living."
