"Are you ready?" My mother asks, as her freshly manicured hand grips tightly onto mine. I take a deep breath, flashing her with a fake grin. I didn't want this to happen. This wasn't supposed to happen. She was not supposed to marry another man other than my father today, and I was not ready for a stepfather especially one younger than her by over ten years.
"Are you?" I counter, but wish my voice didn't sound so bitter. Her face fell and she turned to me. "Mari, I know you don't like that your father and I split. But I'm over him. And I just want to be happy. And I can only be happy if I do this today, and you support me. Please, just slap on a smile and go with me for a day."
The look in her light blue eyes made it obvious that she really wanted this. But I couldn't go through with it. "Mom, this is ridiculous. You just divorced last week, and you're already marrying some man! A man who you constantly spent time with when dad was away!"
"Your father never loved me the way he should've! He just worked and worked and worked-"
"To support us!" I cut her off with tears forming along my waterline.
"No, to spoil you! You took all of his time! You spoiled brat, you were the main focus, I was just the woman who he only gave attention because I birthed you!" She exclaimed unreasonably. I hated when she got like this. I knew she couldn't help it, she had bipolar disorder and diagnosed mild paranoia, and she was most likely high. She was on her meds, so she meant everything she said at least a little. And that was enough to hurt me.
"It's called being a mother, something you clearly suck at being! I don't know why I ever back you up. I don't even know why I'm here. Watching you get married to a man whose last name I don't even know. I-I'm sorry, but I can't be here." I let go of her hand, shaking my head slowly in disappointment.
She looked astonished at what I was about to do, but I didn't care. I should've stayed with dad. I was an official adult, I was allowed to choose who I wanted to live with without being forced. I could even live alone, but I can't get a good enough job to support rent.
I left the chapel, everyone looking at me in confusion as I did. I violently swiped the tears from my eyes and continued down the road to nowhere. I didn't drive myself here, my mother did. I had no idea if we were even in Ester anymore. She was having a casual wedding by a lake that we were going to swim in after, so I just kept on a nice off the shoulder long sleeved shirt and a short flowy skirt.
I walked until my feet hurt, which lasted hours. I noticed I had reached a large sign at the side of the road. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON 2.5 MILES AHEAD. I sighed exhaustedly and started the two and a half miles.
My father lived in Seattle, thank goodness. The universe led me in the right direction. I didn't know what would happen with my mom and I, if I'd ever contact her again, if we'd ever spend time together again. She was freshly divorced, not even single for a good month. And she's already marrying a man a decade younger than her. My mom, Lorraine, was 48 and Draco was 39. The only thing I liked about him was that he had the same first name as Draco Malfoy. And I loved Harry Potter.
Her and my dad never fought, even though she did generally bad things, he tried to love and support her even when she was doing wrong. Just so we could be a perfect family. In fact, he worked hard everyday to support us while my mom did nothing but spend his money. He loved me more than her, she was right about that. But hey, you'd love your daughter more than her mother too if her mother was a total addict and gold digger.
