CHAPTER 2 – DISTRACTIONS -

CLARY

“No.” Clary said.

“Come on Clary,” Jace replied, tilting his head to the side, and flashing Clary one of his famous half-smiles, “you know I’d never actually hurt you.”

“Yeah, but still, I wouldn’t have agreed to get trained if I had even the slightest idea I’d be fighting you!” Clary retorted, playfully poking Jace’s shoulder.

She walked past him, stopping in the corner of the room and sinking down against the cold, wooden wall of the training room. She stared around the room, eyeing each and every piece of equipment as if it was a demon itself.

Somewhat arrogantly, Jace strode over to her, and crouched at her side.

“Afraid of getting beaten by your stunningly attractive badass boyfriend are we?” He smirked, failing to tuck a lock of golden hair behind his ear.

Jace grabbed her hand, and began to gently trace symbols on her small, frail palms. Even the smallest of gestures from Jace could freeze Clary to the spot, sending shivers all the way down her spine.

Seeming to notice Clary’s reaction, Jace lowered his voice to a seductive whisper.

“You seem a little distracted: maybe I could help to keep you focused?” Although he had phrased it as a question, Jace gave her no time to reply, and stood up, and began to tug at the hem of his black shirt, pulling it over his head. He casually tossed the shirt at Clary, laughing playfully as it landed over her head.

“Jace!” She yelled, removing the shirt and pulling it taught, then walking towards Jace innocently, before whipping him with the top.

“You are such a tease…” Clary placed her hands against Jace’s muscled chest. His body was completely covered in runes, and scars left in their wake. To some people, the scars would look ugly in comparison to Jace’s angelic look, but to Clary, they only added to his stunning appearance.

Jace looked down at her with lust evident in his eyes, however his words betrayed the longing in his eyes; “See, there you go again, always distracted,” he lifted her hands from his chest, and pulled her towards the wall of weapons on the other side of the training room.

The wall itself was incredibly tall, and was crammed full of weapons, many of which Clary could not name. The most prominent weapon on the wall was the standard Seraph blade - Jace had showed her the basics of using this weapon; the lunges, parries, blocks, twists and many other various attacks that Clary couldn’t remember. She still wouldn’t call herself an expert, but her knowledge had saved her life on more than a few occasions.

Higher up on the wall, there were spears and swords, alongside various pouches, whose contents Clary could not help but question. As expected, Jace reached for two Seraph blades, and handed one to Clary.

“What’s it called?” Clary asked, tossing the blade from hand-to-hand.

“It’s called Cassiel” Jace replied, staring at Clary intently.

Cassiel” Clary whispered to the blade, waiting for its surface to glow like the witchlight she had become so familiar with, however the blade did not glow. Even after she repeated the name three times, it would not light up.

“It’s not working!” Clary moaned in frustration, handing the seraph blade to Jace expectantly. Instantly, he burst into laughter. “What?” she asked, “What’s so funny?”

“It’s not real Clary,” he chuckled, his earlier outburst of laughter having subsided, “I’m pretty sure real seraph blades aren’t made of wood” he teased, banging the blade against the wall, making the hollow sound of wood on wood echo throughout the hall.

“You’re such a jerk!” Clary complained, shoving Jace backward into the wall of weapons, causing several weapons and various pieces of battle equipment to fall from the wall in a pile around Jace.

Jokingly placing a hand over his heart in pain, Jace said “You are so cleaning that up later.”

“Wait, won’t it still hurt to get stabbed with a wooden blade?” Clary asked, furrowing her brow in thought, flicking the point of the seraph blade she had re-retrieved from Jace mere seconds ago.

“Well then, you better not be slow enough to find out” He said, jabbing out at Clary in slow-motion. Spinning around, Clary laughed out at Jace, when suddenly her eyes were covered by a piece of slightly transparent cloth.

She felt callused hands grip hold of her shoulders, turning her back around slowly.

Relief flooded through Clary when she heard Jace whisper “Count to twenty, and when you get there, take the blindfold off, and come and find me. Starting from…”

He brushed his lips against hers, tracing the outline of her cheekbones lightly.

“Now.”
