Dear Mr. and Mrs. Lodlz

I am writing this letter to inform you of your daughter, Annika Marie Lodlz passing in Ravensbrveck concentration camp June 19, 1944. Inmate 30465 was very orderly and quiet. She never talked back and always helped others. I observed her when she had dish duty, she was so nice to the younger girls, helping them, teaching them, and consoling them. I can honestly say that she made me rethink why I joined Hitler in this horrible treatment of Jews. Annika was a bright young soul and I felt like I had to save her and make sure she made it back to the ones she loved, you. I want you to know her kindness and obedience did not go unnoticed. I always made sure to slip her some extra bread, warmer clothes, and blankets. I noticed something in Annika that I hadn't in other inmates. Happiness. "How could one be happy in the situation she was in?" I would ask myself. I asked her this one day when she was doing laundry on her free day. She told me that she knew she wasn't going home so why be sad on the last few days of your life when you can be happy? That may have been the best thing I have heard anyone say before in my life. In the next couple of months things started getting busy. Orders kept coming in to send certain barracks to the gas chambers and others for sending them to different camps. I was then moved to keep and eye on a different barrack, leaving dear Annika in the hands of Arthur Fitzgerald. I was worried about her, which puzzled me. Why would I be worried about her you ask? I'm worried because I know what Arthur can and will do. My nightmares came true when I heard that he was sending her barrack on a death march. I offered to go with, to see if maybe there was a way I could save her. I was declined, claiming I was needed here more. Then Arthur returned a few days later he reported that the whole barrack was killed a few miles east. I asked about my dear Annika, he said he didn't know who she was, nor did he care. I did though. I went to bed that night knowing I had to write you this. In the few months I knew her, watched, and cared for her, I had grown to loving her. I'm sorry that I couldn't keep her safe and bring her home to you. I pray you find the strength in your hearts to forgive me

                                                         Sincerely,

                                                                  Joseph Broadway
