She stood in the dark, staring at the gold-lined family tree, painted onto the dark green wall--Slytherin colour pride, she guessed. Tentatively, she placed the tips of her fingers against it, as if the cold stares from the painted eyes would burn her. Slowly, she began to trace her fingers over every single face and name, inhaling sharply whenever her fingers ran over a burned off member. Being burned off the family tree was an act of disownment, and the thought of it made her stomach churn. She shook her head, getting rid of the thought. Her fingers came to a stop at Andromeda, her aunt. Her picture-- burned off like she meant nothing, reduced to just a dark spot on a wall.
Her free hand scrunched into a fist, and she gripped her wand so tightly she thought it might snap in two. She took a deep breath before she continued, her fingers racing faster and faster across the tree until she came to the face and name that she was looking for. Her hand stopped abruptly. Draco Malfoy. The heir to the Malfoy fortune, son of Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy...and her cousin. She shivered. She wondered if he bore the dark mark, just like his father. Leaning closer to the wall, she took a better look at him. He was handsome, but then again--they did share the same genes. She smirked. His grey eyes pierced her blue ones. She exhaled slowly. I'll find you.
She turned on her heel and disappeared down the hall. The quiet steps of her leather boots against the hard wooden flooring echoed around the empty, abandoned home. She walked into the kitchen, dusty and crawling with pests from the lack of use. Spiders had raised families in her oven-in fact, there was probably a whole city living in there. 'Kreacher,' she murmured into the musty space. A moment of silence settled, before it was broken by a loud pop. There stood Kreacher, her house elf. He was gangly, practically just skin and bones, like most house elves were. A pang of pity ran through her. She would release him as soon as she got there. 'You called, Mistress?' asked the elf, bowing. She nodded, mouth dry. 'Kreacher, please take me to Hogwarts.'
She took his frail hands in hers and apparated.
