Dauntless go wild, screaming and clapping. There are gasps from Amity and I look behind to see my parents. My dad's face is shocked and my mom's hands are clamped over her mouth to keep from crying. Hot tears threaten to spill over, but I push them back. My sister is crying. Corban stares at me in shock, but quickly looks away. I walk out of the middle of the room and Dauntless leaders sit me down.
"Congratulations. You made the right choice. I'm Sean," an African American man shakes my hand. He is the head leader of Dauntless.
"You're the first Amity to transfer to Dauntless ever. I'm Dan," a pasty white man tells me. Another leader.
"Nice to meet you," I say and shake their hands.
"Sylva Keen," says the man at the front of the room. The tough girl from my school. She has been crying, and when she hears her name her head snaps up. She quickly wipes her eyes. She quickly walks down and cuts herself very quickly and gently. Her blood sizzles on the coals.
"Dauntless," says the man. I look at Sylva's dad, he is asleep.
"Another Amity, eh?" Dan asks Eric. They welcome her. She sits down next to me. She has dark red hair and is very skinny and tall, but seems tough at school. I guess I never got a good luck at her. I wave. She sniffles and looks forward.
"Corban Hendricks." My best friend. He stand up and wipes dust that isn't even there off of his dress pants. He walks down the steps and to the bowls. He cuts his wrist and the blood draws. Erudite. He has always been the smartest person I know. He has a 4.0 GPA. His hands shake. I pull my knees up to my eyes to not look. I catch one last glance, and this is the last time I will ever see him. I hear his blood drop.
"Dauntless." My soul lifts. What? How could he choose Dauntless? Did he do it for me?
"Another one? What is going on in that faction..?" Dan mutters to himself. They welcome him just as they do everyone else. He sits down on the other side of me. Names go by, and people choose their faction. The Ceremony quickly ends and Hensha bids a good day to everyone. Everyone stands and the doors open. Before Dauntless leave, I quickly slip away and find my parents in the crowd. This is highly against the rules. I hug them as tight as I can and give them both kisses.
"I love you. I am so sorry," I say, never wanting to let go.
"We love you too. But you need to go. Now," they respond. I nod, hug my sister and run back to Dauntless.
"Let's go!" Yells Sean. We all run, and to see what's ahead, I stay right behind Dan and Sean, with Corban behind me. We run outside, and run with the wind past the people causing them to move out of the way. We stop beneath a railroad track, and everyone begins to climb. I stay in my place behind them and do as Dan and Sean do. We reach the top, and I quickly look behind me to see if Corban is behind me, and he is. Keeping up. At the railroad tracks, I run as fast as I can behind Dan. A train is coming. They're all jumping onto the train. Sean jumps onto a foot pedestal and opens the door. Then Dan gets behind him at a different door. My turn.
"Come on! Run!" Yells Dan. I run as fast as I can and look behind me. I see the foot pedestal and hop on and grab the side of the train. I open the door. I look out and see that Corban is trying to get on. He put his foot on but he slips. I catch his arm before he tumbles and falls to his death in the city below.
"Help me!" I scream. No one comes. I hold onto his arm as tight as I can. I feel him sleeping. The next door over, Sylva hops on and quickly pulls Carbon onto the train. The rest of the Dauntless pile on, and initiates jump on. Two small, puny twin girls from Candor try to get on. One hops on and turns around for her sister. The one reaches out her hand, and the track is becoming thinner and thinner. The girl on the train steps out of the train and puts both of her feet on the foot pedestal. She puts one hand out and grabs her sister. She is obviously weak and her hand is slipping. The one girl's feet get off the track and she dangles on just by her arm. I feel bad, and so I run to the small girls. I quickly grab the other twin girl's hand that is dangling and pull her in. She thanks me. A foolish Erudite boy, not holding onto anything looks out of the train opening and falls off the edge into the city. I hear his screams, and then there is a large smacking sound as I watch his body hit the pavement at the bottom. People crowd around him and look up at the train. I back away and sit down with Corban. Today, is going to be a very tough day.
