She had decided life was too short lived to keep going the way she was. At fourteen years old she had her life planned out, leave this sleepy town in the dust, go out in the world and make something of herself. She ended up back in Eureka, California a week later, only to finish school and fall in love with her highschool sweetheart Robert. He was a great guy, she was seventeen him nineteen, they married the week she turned eighteen. Things were great at first, until he started drinking to relieve the stress from the hard labor he had put himself through. At first it was just yelling, putting her down, making her feel useless. Then came the hitting. He claimed it was an accident the first time he struck, her cheek enflamed, the color of the dress she wore. Stupidly she forgave him, only for it to get worse in the years to come.

Now twenty years old and in her first trimester of pregnancy, Mckenzie Renolds packed her small four door sky blue subaru with as much as she could. She left her wedding band and signed divorce papers on the kitchen table with a note telling him she was leaving and not to look for her. She drove off into the night before he could come home from a night out with the guys, before he could beat her to a bloody mess. Kenzie didn't know where she was going, she just knew she couldn't stay here.

After hours of mindless driving she saw a brightly lit vacancy sign and pulled into the little motel parking lot. Grabbing her purse and a small duffle of clothes she went into the office and greeted the woman behind the deak with a smile.

"Hi there! What can i help you with?" Kenzie looked down to see her name was Sheila.
"Hi Shelia, i need a room for the night."
"Well of course! That'll be 59.76."

Kenzie fished through her purse and grabbed her wallet and pulled out the cash and handed it over.

With the room key in hand she went to the door and looked to the side and spotted a map.

"Excuse me, how much for the map?" She asked, looking over her shoulder.

"Oh dont worry those are free!" Sheila said with a bright smile.

McKenzie returned the smile, grabbing one before she went off to find her room to shower and crash for the night before a full day of driving.
