Just one more week. That's seven days until school starts and I am so excited! It's been so long since I've seen my friends and I miss them. I know what you're thinking,"Why don't you just hang out with them?" Well I can't, and let me tell you why. My dad has been acting weird all summer, and not in the pod - person kind of way, but more like an 'I'm nervous and I have to tell you something important but I can't' weird. I think he's paranoid about something but I don't know what. Anyway, due to the recent change in behavior he's been.. overprotective. Meaning my friends can't come over and I can only go out when he is there. I tried to explain to him that I'm sixteen now and I'm not a little girl anymore, but he won't listen. He peeks behind the curtains every so often and looks over his shoulder when he leaves the house. Just last week he started giving me day of the week bear spray. He won't even let me leave the house, what the hell am I gonna use it for?! So, yes, I'm excited for school. I finally get to physically interact with the outside world, even if it's at school.
*knock, knock, knock* My dad pokes his head into the room and gives me a nervous smile. That can't be good. I readjust myself from laying down on the bed, and sit up facing him.
"Hey sweetheart! Just wanted to um, check up on you." He glances around the room quickly before maintain eye contact again.
"Daddy, can I talk to you?" I ask, hoping that maybe I can find out what's wrong. His brow furrows in concern,"Yeah,sure, is there something wrong? Did something happen?" He walks hurriedly to my bed and sits on the corner.
"No, nothing's wrong...well at least not with me."
"What do you mean?"
I look down and try to think of a way to state this correctly. "Dad, are you not telling me something?"
His eyebrows shoot up in shock. "I- I have no idea what- what you're um,talking about!" He stutters.
"Dad..." I say warningly. He sighs in defeat and hangs his head. Rubbing his hands slowly against his face he looks up at me again. Taking in a breath he says,"I'm sorry honey, it's just... I know how much you wanted to see your friends and I didn't want you to hate me and be angry with me. So I didn't tell you but you really need to know and I didn't want to worry you, and--"
"Dad!"I put my hands on his shoulders,"What's going on?"
"Laura, honey, I'm transferring you to another school."
"Oh," seems to be the only word I can remember right now. I drop my hands from his shoulders and run them through my hair.
"You're not mad, are you?" he asks cautiously, not wanting to upset me. I close my eyes and take in a breath, exhaling slowly.
"No, I'm not mad. Just confused. Why am I moving schools, exactly?"
"Well, you see, this school is...special." I furrow my brow in confusion. "Soon you will understand. I can't explain now but once we get there I will." He begins to sit up and pats my leg."I would get to packing if I were you, we leave in two days."
"Wait, what?!" I starts after him as he gets to the door. I grab his wrist and he turns around, door knob already in the other hand.
"Yeah, the school is kinda...far."
"Where is it?"
"The United States. I can't say which one but, like I said: once we get there I'll explain everything." He was out the door and heading down the stairs, leaving my spluttering in my door way. "Do I at least get to know the name?!" I call after him. "Nope!" Ugh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today is the day that we leave for the mystery school. I drag my suitcase out of the house and into dad's car, waiting for him to lock up the house.
"Okay, do you have everything you need?"
"Yeah." I nod.
"Clothes? Toothbrush? Toothpaste? Clean socks? The bear spray?" He lists off some items.
"Yes,yes,yes,yes, and sadly...yes." I huff. He gives me a pointed look."Hey where we're going, you might need that!"
"Dad, why would bears roam wild at a boarding school? In America."
He puts his hands up in defense. "You never know...." I roll my eyes and close the trunk. Dad walks over to the driver's seat and waits for me to get in. As I sit in the seat and buckle my seat belt he asks,"Are you ready kiddo?"
"Let's see. I have no idea where were going, why were going there, and why it's necessary, so, sure. Why not?"
He let's out a frustrated sigh,"Laur, this is for your own good. I promise I'm doing all of this for a reason."
"Do I not even get to say goodbye to my friends?! A text isn't exactly the best way to deliver news like this,Dad!" I shout, my hands waving in the air. "Honey, I will explain everything as soon as we get to the school." I sigh. "Whatever."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The trip to the airport was fairly short, though in silence. I had my ear buds in and listened to Selena Gomez. The music video to bad liar was pretty good. We eventually found a parking spot and got out of the small Honda. Dad popped the trunk and I grabbed my bags. He walked around, took his luggage and shut the trunk. Locking the car, we walked inside the building. We obtained our tickets and got in line for security checks. About thirty minutes later was time to board the plane. Everything else was already taken care of and I had my carry-on with me as well as my dad's. I pulled out a book about vampires and began to read. As our flight was taking off, my dad puts his hand on my knee. I mark my place in the novel and turn to him.
"I wanted to say that I'm sorry. I know this is very abrupt and sudden but I had to do this. I hope you understand." his tone soft.
"I'm sorry, too. I just didn't expect this, is all. And a warning would've been nice but, I understand." I respond. He smiles and gives me a side hug. Well...as good of one you can give considering our position. He takes out a book of his own and reads and I do the same.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I gave up on reading the book a while ago and started to listen to music again when the intercom came on,"Hello ladies and gentlemen, this is your capitan speaking. We will be landing in San Francisco shortly. There may be some turbulence. This is just a forewarning. Thankyou."
San Francisco. Huh. At least now I know where we are. My dad was lightly snoring so I poked him until he woke up.
"We're landing in a few minutes. You should probably get up." He grumbles, stretches, and rubs the sleep out of his eyes.
We feel the landing gear touch the runway and I put away my headphones. The plane lands and we grab our carry-on. My ears still haven't popped and after a five hour flight,yeah, I'm jet-lagged. Walking to the rental car place right next to the airport, we picked out a small black car, similar to my dad's Honda. Afterwards we picked up lunch and went to the hotel that dad reserved for us. Dad was unpacking and I sat on the bed adjacent to his.
"So.... We're here. Are you gonna tell me what's going on now?" He looked over his shoulder and simply stated,"Not yet." I let out a frustrated sigh. "Well, at least not until we get to the school grounds. You'll understand soon." I groan and fall backwards on the bed, blowing a strand of hair that landed on my face away. This was gonna be weird.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I looked out the window as we drove to the school. Apparently the school is hidden and takes another three hours to get to. Eventually I saw I large building that looked like a Gothic cathedral. It was old and anyone could tell. There was a court yard but it was hidden behind some bushes, save for the entryway. We pulled up and I hop out of the car,taking in the scenery. There was a clock tower towards the back and I could see a body of water in the distance, maybe a lake. Dad walked up to me, my luggage in hand. A large shadow was cast over head and I as I looked up, I almost fell to the ground. Was that a girl with wings?! My dad's voice pulls me out from my shock,"Honey, welcome to Silas High!"
And then I fainted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I heard hushed voices all around me and I felt the presence of a few people. I cracked open my eyes and immediately regretted it as the bright light temporarily blinded me. I groaned and sat up slowly and felt hands that I recognized as my father's help me up. As my vision adjusted, I saw four people standing in front of me. One was my dad but the other three I didn't know. The tallest one was a girl with long fiery hair, seeming to be around my age. I blushed under her gaze, light blue orbs staring at me. I saw something flutter behind her... ohmygosh those are her wings! She must be the figure that flew over me! The girl next to her looked completely different. She was average height (though still slightly taller than me) ,slightly chubby,and had long dark brown hair that had a slight wave to it. Her eyes so dark that they were almost black,hidden behind frames, her skin a light caramel color. Next to her was a woman who was taller than the girl with red hair. Her dark hair was put up into a bun and her buisness suit indicated that she was either the principal or a figure of authority. Her thin lips were pursed with concern as she looked at me.
"Hello Laura, it is great to finally meet you, though it would have been better under different circumstances, I have heard so much about you!" She smiled and stuck out her hand and I shook it as she introduced herself,"My name is Ms.Cochrane I'm the principal here at Silas." She gestured to the girls next to her, introducing them as well,"Ms. Hollis, this is Danny Lawrence and Carter Stone. They were the ones who brought you into the infirmary. The tallest,Danny, gave a small wave and Carter smiled. I nodded in acknowledgement as Ms.Cochrane continued,"Ms.Stone will be the one who will show you around campus along with her elder sister Cleo." As the name was said, another girl walked in. She was a little shorter than Carter with long black hair. Their complexion was about the same and they both donned glasses. She stood by the door and held her hand up in greeting and I did the same. I slid off the examination table that I was on and stood,although shakily, on my feet. My dad grabbed my arm to help me balance and I turned towards him. He smiled sheepishly,"I guess it's time to explain,huh?" "Ya think?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Silas High is a school for teen girls with abilities. As you can see, we aren't exactly a normal school." Danny was telling me what the school was about whilst Dad and Ms.Cochrane talked in the corner. The three girls I had met are all students here and all have powers, apparently. I can't exactly deny it considering I know that I'm awake and one girl has freaking wings, so yeah. Carter butted in,"Yeah, and we should probably inform you about the hierarchy here..."
"What?" She pushed up her glasses and sat beside me. "Well there are different levels of powers, yeah? There are the smaller ones that no one really notices,the nature ones, elemental, physical like Danny over here, and mental like my sister." I can't help myself, so I ask,"What are your powers?" She smirks and looks to Cleo who looks at her with warning. "Carter,no." "But--" "Not in here!" "Ugh fine!" She looks back at me and says,"I'll show you once we get outside." I look over at Cleo and before I can open my mouth she states,"I have telekinesis and telepathy." How did she-- telepath, right... She laughs at my thought and honestly, that's terrifying. "Sorry," she consoles,"I kinda just hear them." Carter speaks up again,"And you already know what Dan can do." Danny twitches her wings for emphasis. I nod, slowly taking this all in." Anyway, the hierarchy depends on how strong your powers are and what they are. Nature Powers are usually the coveted ones. And you know how every highschool has their cliques. Our clique (referring to me and my sister) is C3." "But there is only two of you.." I add. "Well there is our roommate as well. We have some the most powerful abilities at this school!" "Carter, stop exaggerating!" Cleo butts in."Don't listen to her, she hears what she wants to hear and it's the same with what she says." As I was processing, Dad and Ms.Cochrane walked back over and told me it was time get settled in. I stood up along with Carter, and all six of us walked out the door. Dad went to the car to get my suitcases and Ms.Cochrane was telling me where the dorm are and that I would be bunking with Carter, Cleo(they weren't separated) and one other girl. A dorm was divided up into two bedrooms with two bathrooms and a kitchen/dining room. All in all they were fairly large by the sound of it. Dad came back and handed me my luggage. I set it down as her gave me one of his signature bear hugs. "I have to go now but you," he gives me another sqeeze,"you stay out of trouble. If you have any questions just talk to Ms.Cochrane, okay? She knows everything abou the situation. I love you." I hug him closer to me,"I love you too, daddy." He kisses the top of my head and reluctantly let's go. Walking back to the car, he turns around and waves one last goodbye. I wave back and he gets in the car, driving away. Carter puts a hand on my shoulder and I look back at her. She smiled,"Come on, let's get you settled in." She takes one of my suitcases and signals for me to follow her. We walk down a brick path as I follow the sisters and Danny. The path was lined with shrubbery and flowers and everything was very open. Danny said she had to go so we parted ways with her and continued.There were large fields and an arena of sorts that we passed by. When I saw certain buildings or areas, Cleo would turn around and explain them to me. The field was for during down time. It was where they could use their powers freely outside of class. At least those with non-mental powers. They couldn't exactly stop using those. At the mention of the field, Carter's eyes lit up. "Can I show her now?" She asked her sister. Cleo sighed,"yeah, just don't go crazy." Carter giggled and took my hand and ran with me to the field. What the hell is going on? As soon a we stopped she turned to me and smiled nervously,"You ready to see my powers?" Ohhhhh. "Yeah sure." She grins and takes a couple steps back. Her eyes close and I begin to hear rumbling. The ground is shaking and they once blue sky turns grey. Storm clouds form over head and the wind picks up. What the hell?! Is she doing all of this? The ground underneath her feet rises and she is lifted into the air. Lightning strikes and thunder rolls. The wind making her hair flow in all directions. Her hands are lifted from her sides and they begin to glow. Why the hell are they glowing? All of a sudden her hands burst into flames. She opens her eyes and they glow and they vibrant violet color. The clouds release rain and it swirls around her. Holy shit! This girl is seriously powerful. Her hands go back down to her sides, extinguishing the flames the storm dissapates and the ground returns to its normal state. Carter walks toward me and asks,"So what'd ya think? Pretty cool huh?" I heard Cleo laughing and I turned around to se her doubled over, almost sobbing from laughing too hard. "Oh my, AHAHAHAHA! your face is all-- and you're like,AHAHAHAHA!" She dries her tears of laughter and walks over to us. "Oh, I'm sorry it's just you face was..." she makes a face in awe as her mouth flops open and her eyebrows shoot to her hairline. I guess I looked pretty stupid..."Only a little." She replied. Telepath. Right. "So!" I face her sister,"You can control the weather? And like, elements and stuff?" She did so many different things I don't even know what she's fully capable of. "Well, if it is connected to nature, I can bend it to my will. So yes, weather and elements." I nod, still in shock obviously. How can this even be real?
'Don't let Carter hear you, it'll go straight to her head.' What. The. Actual. Hell. Who said that? 'It's just me dude, chill.'Cleo? 'Did I mention I can also talk to people in their minds? No? Oh well. Now you know.' Get out of my head, Cleo! 'Okay, okay, geez...'
We start to walk back to the path and eventually we find our way to the dorm. Dorm 307. Carter puts my stuff on one of the twin beds,"So, the other girl that lives her is..kinda intense. But you'll get used to her. You guys will share a room and I share with Cleo. The door to our side is right there," she points to a wooden door on the far side of the room." You can put your stuff in here," she walks over to a wardrobe,"and your bed is the one on the right. If you need anything, just come to our side, yeah? Okay." Carter and Cleo open the door and go into their room and I take time to observe my new surroundings. Next to the wardrobe and behind my roommate's bed was a mini fridge and a small table. Adjacent to the door separating our rooms was a desk and computer and to the right of it was the bathroom. I was unpacking my clothes into the wardrobe when the door squeaked open. It must be my roommate. A girl about my height walked in and dropped her stuff next to the bed, not even taking a second to acknowledge my presence. Rude. Well just because she's rude doesn't mean I have to be. She goes to the mini fridge and cracks open a can of grape soda and proceeds to plop herself down on the bed, a book that looks older than the school itself in hand. I walk over to her and she doesn't look up.
"Hmm, hmm," I clear my throat loudly to get her attention. She looks up at me through her lashes, clearly not impressed. "Can I help you?" She drawls. Oh wow. She uh..she really pretty. "Yeah, hi. I'm your new roommate, Laura." I stuck out my hand for her to shake which she just looks at and ignores. Does she not even know common sense? Ugh. "What's your name?" I try again, maybe she's just in a bad mood or something.
"The name's Carmilla. Now can I get back to reading?" She sneered. Whatever. I finish putting away everything and she's in the same position that I saw her in twenty minutes ago. The door to the other room opens and Carter pops her head out and grins,"Laura, I see you've met Carm." She jokes. Carmilla looks up at hearing Carter voice and smirks,"Hey Ro!" Carter playfully glares. Why the hell did she call her Ro? Cleo walks in behind Carter and answers her. "Rose is Carter's middle name. It was shortened to Ro because at the time Carter went by her middle name when we met Carm." "Would you stop doing that?!" "Sorry, again, it just...happens." she looks to the floor sheepishly. I sigh,"it's fine, I'm just still not used to all of this." I apologize. Carter made her way to Carmilla's bed and sat next to her. "Wait." Carmilla holds up a hand,"you've never been around Powers?" Eyebrow cocked in disbelief. "Never." I respond," I don't even know why I'm here. I don't have powers, at least I think I don't..." I've never thought about that. Why am I here? I need to talk to Ms.Cochrane. "I can take you." Cleo offers."Thanks." Carter and Carmilla sit in confusion, not knowing the conversation we had in my mind. Carter shrugs and Carmilla rolls her eyes and continues to read her book as Cleo opens the door with her mind and takes me to Ms.Cochrane's office. "I'll wait outside." She tells me as I open the door. I nod and walk into the room. Ms.Cochrane is sitting at her desk and is using the computer. She sees me and smiles,"I was expecting you." I shut the door and sat in one of the chairs in front of her desk. "You've come to ask me why your here, right?" I raise my eyebrows in shock. "Can you read minds too?"I inquire. She chuckles at that,"No, but I get visions of the future." Oh. "Anyway let me tell you why you're here. So you don't think uou have any powers, right?" I nod." Well that is why your dad brought you here. You see, your mother came to this school as well. And your father went to the rival school, Zeta Academy. Which is across the lake. Both of your parents were Powers and great ones at that." She had a reminiscent smile on her face, eyes glazed over from memories of the past. She looks back at me and grins," Do you want to know their abilities? And just so you know, powers are inherited so it is most likely that you will have at least one of theirs. Or your grandparents'. Your mother was at nature Power, like Ms.Stone, except her domain was over light. She could contort sunlight, artificial light, lightning, or any source of it to do her biding and the good she did with it was wonderful. As well as producing her own light. Your father on the other hand...he could shift into any animal he wanted. Though his favorite was always the bear... I know you belive you are Mundane but I can sense that you are quite the Power. Tomorrow classes will start for you and you will learn what you have and how to use it. Oh and," she hands me a sheet of paper," here is your schedule. If you lose it, no worries you are in the same classes as your dorm mates." "Thank you Ms.Cochrane" I walk out the door and see Cleo leaning against the wall. "Ready?" She asks. "Yeah." We walk back to the dorm and I saw Carter but not Carmilla. Cleo goes and sits next to her sister, who looks like she's trying to hold in a laugh. I tilt my head head little in confusion but before I can open my mouth,something grabs my ankle. I scream and all of a sudden the shadow on the floor begins to grow. What the hell is happening?! It starts to take form and before I knew it my hands began to glow as it put them up in defense and a ball of light shot out of them and crashed into the shadow and someone fell out of it. "Carmilla?!" The girl stood up and brushed her dark bangs out of her pale face, dusting herself off. She put her hand up and swung it in a downwards motion, putting the shadow back in place. She looked at me in horror, waking towards the bed to sit next to the sisters who were looking at me in surprise. They spoke in unison,"Light manipulation."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You need to calm down, love. This is great! You know your power know! At least the first one..." Carter trails off in thought.
Cleo walks up to me and takes hold of my trembling hands."Hey, it's gonna be okay. I know this is very new to you but you'll get the hang of it." I glance over at Carmilla who was looking at me like I have a second head. I hope I didn't hurt her... "Are you okay?" I ask, hoping that she is.
Carmilla glares at me,"Oh I don't know... how would you feel if you were hit with a fucking fireball?! As a shadow manipulator, that's what it felt like!" "I'm so sorry," was the only thing I could get out due to me being on the verge of tears. I didn't want this to happen it just did! I heard a sigh and a hand on my shoulder,"Cupcake, it's fine. It's not a big deal." "But you just--" "I know what I said." She cut me off,"I was just angry. No one has been able to force me out of a shadow before so...kudos to you." She walks back to the bed and I gather myself. Cleo walks me to my bed and rubs my back."No worries, okay. Tomorrow is training anyway. Carter can totally help since you're both nature Powers." Carter perks up at that,"Yeah, I mean, I can summon lightning and sunshine so, that's a thing!" Cleo takes a look at the clock on the nightstand. 11:13 P.M. "Okay, it's been a long day for everyone so let's get some rest and pick up the morning?" Everyone agrees and gets ready for the night.
As I layed in bed, so many things were going through my mind: this is all happening so quickly. My mom went here. I have her power. I at least made new friends. What Carmilla's deal? Of course we had to be freaking opposite Powers. Because why the hell not? Whatever. I need sleep if I want to keep my sanity.
