petrichor - the pleasant, earthy smell after rain.
we walked down the sidewalk of the main street in silence together. until i hear the unforgettable puff of her cigarette and a cloud of smoke pools around my head. i cough and wave it away.
"tiffany!" i say in anger, and grab the cigarette out of her mouth, throwing it on the soaking wet pavement and stamping on it with my heel.
"hey! that cost money, my money!" she says, her knotty blond hair bouncing as she moves her head to send me a glare.
"i know that dumbass. stop spending your money on cigarettes and crap you'll never use!" i say, hugging my umbrella closer to the frame of my body. the rain pattered onto it as we walked through the sidewalk of new york city, passing macey's. a yellow taxi drives by and goes through a puddle beside us, which splashes us and soaks our clothes. tiffany curses at the car.
"hey, just cause you're a drop dead gorgeous rich girl, who by the damn way is a model and a singer, doesn't mean you can give out to your poor sidekick, partner in crime, best friend since we were 3!" she replies, giving me a toothy smile. we stop at our favourite café and walk in, the scent of caffeine clouding our noses.
"number one, i'm not gorgeous, number two, i'm not a singer, number three, you're not my sidekick or poor!" i say back as we sit down at a table together.
"oh come on leo, you are beautiful, you're a great singer and maybe i'm not a sidekick, but mom is struggling with the whole money-bills thing."
"well then stop spending her well earned money on cancer sticks, tiff!" i say, almost sternly.
she flicks a strand of my raven black hair and just smiles as a reply. i've known tiffany almost my entire life, and we grew up together. she has long blond hair which she doesn't take care of well so it's always knotty and dirty, blue eyes and a scruffy, dirty, tomboy look and vibe that always comes off her. she's right, her family is struggling with money, we both know it. i got lucky with a job in modelling which pays enough for me, and i've never liked the thought of too much money, so i often gently offer her and her mother some of it, which they always decline. they live in a small apartment together with her younger sister, bex, in a block of apartments that are infamous for their burglars, robbers, criminals, drug dealers, and the like. basically, it's not a good place to live, which has made tiffany very tough and able to manage herself.
i am leo paul, well, leonie, but i'm usually only called leonie when someone is mad at me... yes, leo paul as in logan and jake pauls' sister. i work as a model for various brands. i don't like saying to people that i'm a model, and tiffany knows that and teases me about it, even if it's a good, high paying job, i just don't like the sound of it. when people hear model, they think of a vain, pouty little rich girl who's only rich for her beauty. i don't want to be thought of like that, i just got lucky being a model, even though i don't like the job. i do like singing, but i personally don't think i'm much good. i have long, raven black hair and green eyes. yes, jake and logan are blond, but our mother has the same hair colour as me. i live with her in a house on the outskirts of new york. my brothers often visit and we we all get along quite well usually.
after tiffany and i order and finish our drinks, we get up to leave, my black boots clacking and tiffany's grey sneakers squeaking, and walk out. we stand just outside of the coffee shop. the petrichor fills the air and i smile at the beautiful scent, the rain had stopped.
"well tiffany, when will i see you again?" i ask, smiling sweetly at her. she's often unreliable when it comes to meeting up, sometimes she gets into scraps with people in her apartment block, sometimes she breaks her phone and is unable to contact me about how she can't come to the cinema that week, or whatever. i don't mind, i know how tough things get for her.
she grins. "no idea. bye, see you soon, maybe?"
i smile and hug her, grab my umbrella and then turn around and walk away, setting off on my journey home. little did i know how bad things would be once i arrive. little did i know that that was the last time i'd be seeing tiffany in a long time.
