Prologue
I can still remember the moment I fell in love with Grayson Harris for the first time, before everyone knew his name and before everyone thought they felt like I did. Like I still do. He was sitting on his porch one day in October, across the street from my porch, strumming that old, beat up guitar that his dad gave him for his tenth birthday right before he died. It seemed like he hadn't put it down since he got it. His shaggy dark brown hair was covering his blue eyes and he was singing some popular song that I couldn't remember the name of as he strummed out the chords. That was when I knew.
To Grayson, I was just like his kid sister, Johanna, since she and I went to school together and were in the same class. Grayson was a Junior and Johanna and I were Freshmen in high school. Even though I was just two years younger than he was, Grayson always looked at me like my older sisters did. Even though I was sixteen, they still treated me like a twelve year old. I'd always be the baby sister. I wanted so badly for Grayson to look at me differently.
One afternoon, I was over at Johanna's studying for our history test when her mom and Grayson walked into the kitchen, where we were sitting. They looked like they had been arguing.
"Grayson," his mother said sternly. "You're applying to college, and you're taking the SAT on Saturday. How many times do I have to tell you that being a musician and starting a band with Eric is not a real job?"
Eric was Grayson's best friend. They had a garage band set up in Eric's basement with two of their other friends and had dreams of making it big some day. Grayson knew that he didn't want to do anything else.
"Mom, one day I'm going to make it really big, and you're going to regret thinking that," he said, almost sounding more sad than angry.
"Okay, Grayson," she sighed. "Just don't expect me to keep supporting you. I went through this with your father when we were first married, and I will not go through it again with you, too."
She left the room and slammed the door behind her.
"For what it's worth," I said, before I even realized I was speaking. "I really do think you'll be great out there someday. You'll make it."
"Thanks, Mia," Grayson said, rubbing my head in a 'you're like my little sister' way before exiting the kitchen as well.
Grayson moved out the next day. I thought I would never see him again. Little did I know, I would.
Chapter One - Ten Years Later
Mia
My alarm was blaring, signaling that it was time for me to get ready to head to the restaurant where I worked in downtown Portland, Oregon. My head ached at the thought. There was no reason for me to be working at a restaurant when I had a nursing degree, but neither Rylee, my roommate and best friend, nor I could find work where we wanted to live, so here we were. The only solace was that both Rylee and I had the whole next week off to go to Los Angeles, for my birthday. We left that night after work. I pulled into the parking lot and ran my hands through my long, messy, brown hair and took a deep breath before exiting the car and tying my hair up in a knot on the top of my head.
