I watch the hands on the clock slowly tick away as I tap the end of my pencil on the glass desk that stretches out from the wall to middle of the room where it stops, allowing a flight of polished, dark hardwood stairs to sit. Everyone quietly chats with each other, probably talking about their plans for winter break. Everyone quiets down as Professor Amberley stands up from her desk and walks in front of it.
"So, everyone, you are thirty minutes away from winter break. I'm sure that you've all thought that I'm not giving out an exam for this class," she says. Everyone looks around at each other. I glance at Lydia who sits a few people away from me, and she raises an eyebrow.
"However, there will be an exam," Professor Amberley says, pausing, letting people groan in disbelief.
"And the exam is going to be unlike your other exams for other classes. Over the next three weeks, you will be traveling to seven different cities: Paris, Seoul, London, Los Angeles, Dubai, Toronto, and Sydney," Professor Amberley says.
Everyone gasps. Lydia raises her hand.
"Yes, Lydia?" Professor Amberley asks.
"What if we have plans over the holidays?"
"Let me continue explaining. Maybe I'll answer your question if you let me finish," Professor Amberley says, annoyed. Lydia gulps, blushing in embarrassment.
"The expenses are paid for, and you'll have more than enough time to complete this assignment. Remember that it counts as your final exam. If you don't complete the assignment on time, you'll be kicked out of this course. The only time you can return home is for an emergency and Christmas.
"You'll be given a tracker that will show me where you are at all times, so I'll know if you're following my directions. If you aren't following my directions then you'll fail the exam and get kicked out of he course. As Lydia had asked earlier, you might have figured out by now that any plans would now have to be canceled," Professor Amberley explains.
"I had so many plans though!" Tyler whines. I scoff to myself.
"Plans to go out clubbing, getting drunk, and making out with with every girl you meet?" Professor Amberley asks.
I can't help but snicker, and most of the class starts laughing. Tyler slouches down lower into his seat.
Professor Amberley continues talking about the exam, handing out these big pouches that hold everything. I notice Tyler messing around with his stuff, but don't think anything of it. Finally, finally, the bell rings. Everybody pours out of the building in excitement. I rush up to Lydia who seems to be waiting for me by the edge of the cement steps.
"I can't believe that witch of a lady," Lydia says, turning to walk down the steps. "Well, at least we have plans now," I comment.
"Look at all of this junk she gave us, Marilyn! If I'm gonna be traveling around the world I don't want to have to worry about some lady tracking my every move, and taking pictures of all these places just to end up having to explain 'what it means to me'," Lydia says, looking through the brochure of all of the cities that Professor Amberley gave us.
All of a sudden someone covers my eyes with their hands from behind me. I rip them off to see Avery and his dorky smile.
"Oh, it's just you," I say, giving Avery a hug. "So, what are your plans for the break?" Avery asks, putting an arm around my shoulders. "Any plans that I might've had have been canceled now," I say.
"Why?" Avery asks.
"Because our wicked photography teacher's forcing us to travel around the world," Lydia says. "That's sounds fun though!" Avery exclaims. "We have to take pictures. If we don't take pictures in the seven cities she gave us, then we're kicked out of the class," I explain. "Harsh. Nothing like getting kicked out of your major in the last year of college," Avery says.
"Avery?"
"Hm?"
"Would you mind if you joined me on this trip?" I ask, and he raises his eyebrows. "Of course not! I would love traveling with you! But, how am I going to join you? I can't buy tickets for places that you're going to in just a few days, and I don't want you to buy them either," Avery says, frowning.
All of a sudden, an idea pops into my head. "Hey Tyler!" I shout. Tyler turns and looks at me, and I gesture for him to come. He approaches me. "What?" he asks, clearly annoyed. "Can we make a deal?" I ask.
"What kind of deal?"
"Since you want to stick to all of your plans for the break, how about I take your ticket and tracker and everything, and I'll do the exam for you," I lie.
"Since when did you become so generous?" Tyler asks. "Do you want to pass this dang exam or what?" I say, not answering his question. He stands there for a second, fidgeting with something in his pile of stuff, and hands me everything, walking off. "You could at least say thank you," I shout. He turns around, glaring at me. "Thanks," he shouts, and runs off.
"You're seriously gonna help him?" Lydia asks. "Of course not," I say, handing everything to Avery. "I'm not a photographer like you, Marilyn. What do I do with this tracker and all of this random stuff?" he asks.
"Throw it away. The ticket's for you," I say. After a few seconds he laughs.
"Miss Marilyn, did I ever say how much I love you?" Avery asks, smiling. I laugh. "Um, excuse me? Miss Single Lydia is standing right here," Lydia says. "Oh, sorry," I say, and she winks. "That was clever, Marilyn," Lydia says.
"Thanks. It runs in the family," I say, winking. Avery says that he has to talk to a teacher about something, and Lydia was going over to a friend's house. So, I headed home by myself. As I was looking for a taxi to hail, I noticed a black car that stopped at a café right across the street from me. I don't think anything of it and finally hail a taxi.
I get inside and tell the taxi driver my address, and he nods. After a few seconds of driving, I notice the black car is right behind us. Even after so many turns, it keeps following us. I start to panic. I don't want this person following us to know where I live. "Just stop right here, thank you," I say, handing him money. "Keep the change," I say, getting out of the car.
I start walking, and the black car, unfortunately, starts to slowly follow behind me. I speed up, and eventually break into a run. I run into an alleyway, and the car drives past me. I run all the way to my apartment, and when I reach it, I slam the door shut, making sure to have it locked. How I fell asleep that night, I'll never know.
