We're expected to be perfect. We are all suppose to be in line and the same. Our government is treating us like slaves to their stupid rules and I am the only one that sees the truth. At least that's what I think. Our little utopia is the last place alive after the apocalypse. Many years ago the world was infected by some unknown disease and almost everyone died. Few were left and continued to build a foundation for people to live. This place is called Xiania. I think around 5000 people live here.
I was born 16 years ago and next week...my fate will be decided. Here in Xiania we take tests to determine a persons fate or future. Every month, a test takes place for 16 year old kids to take. Both physical and mental. The government only wants the strongest and smartest alive. If someone fails either test...they are sent for execution. It's brutal and completely unnecessary. If someone passes the test, they proceed to complete another few tests to determine what career they must do and where they live. We have three districts: Low, Middle, Upper. The low district are poor and live in shaggy homes and have horrible jobs: some examples are pipe cleaners and trash sifters. Middle district are most common and are jobs like: chef, butler, construction worker. They live in larger houses with 2-3 bedrooms (Low may only have one - most times none at all). Upper is pretty self-explanatory, they are the top. They have mansions and really well-paying jobs: government, programmer, etc.
Next week will be my test, and I, Amberlee, will pass. I have been studying and preparing for years and I will not let the governments stupid test get in my way. I will not let them kill me. What I don't understand is: Why doesn't anyone care that they are killing people? Innocent people?!
<<NEXT WEEK>>
Today is the day.
I hop out of bed right as my alarm rings. Pacing about my walk-in closet, I finally choose an outfit. A solid black dress with long lacy sleeves. It's not too fancy but just right. I grab the necessities for a shower and hop in. Once done, I dress and brush my long brown hair. Hopping down the stairs to breakfast, I see my mom. My mother was chosen as an upper class, so was my father. The only thing this place has that I feel semi okay with is the fact that we get to choose who we love and like...marry. Although we are only allowed to date in our district and after we pass the test. That is, if we do. " Hey, sweetie. " My mother says, pulling me into a hug. Wrapping my arms around her, I feel safe and secure...but I know this will be the last time. The day of the test...lives change and people leave. I will only get to see my mother through a screen, I can never feel her touch after today. My father is working all the time as a government official, so I rarely ever see him. I love him still, but it's different between mom and I. We have a special bond that the rules are going to break and I'm not happy about it.
We embrace and then head to breakfast. We eat and I say our final goodbyes. I hug my mom and kiss her cheek. "I'll miss you mommy.. " I cry into her shoulder, I've never felt this weak, but right now I just wanted to cry and let the world collapse around me. We all have different realities, and I hate mine.
The car pulls up and I hesitantly let go of my mom, she holds onto my hand as I sit down in the black car that will take me to my new life. My mother lets go and the car door closes, I open the window and let another tear slip down my reddening cheeks. "I will always love you mommy. " I cry. She forms a saddened smile on her face, " I will always love you too. I have one piece of advice for you, my little girl. Let your love guide you. If you ever feel stuck or out of place...let the love inside your heart come out. It will guide you and help you forever. It's a gift not many have. " My mother says in a tone I had never heard from her before. The car pulls away before I got the chance to ask her what she meant. I wish I would have asked her.
The car pulls up to a large white building with many people scattered everywhere. I see people from all districts, the Low have long brown and baggy shirts with ripped ugly pants and the middle have clothing slightly worse than mine. There are little Upper here. I see maybe a few, we stand out because of our glamorous clothes. I hop out of the parked car and immediately find my best friend Lylana. Her fabulous blonde hair bounces in the air as she approaches me. "Hey!!!" She says and hugs me. I hope we are in the same district when we finish the test..I know she'll pass, she is really smart and athletic. "Hey, How ar-" I begin but am cut off by-
"ALL STUDENTS REPORT TO THE TESTING ROOM. I REPEAT ALL STUDENTS REPORT TO THE TESTING ROOM NOW!!"
