Jack woke up to see the angry face of his teacher.
"Jack," he asked, clearly frustrated, "can you answer my question?"
"Um," Jack muttered, trying to remember. "Uhhh, 14?"
The teacher shook his head. "This is history, not math."
Giggles broke out from the class. At age thirteen, with sandy blonde hair that extended to the bottom of his neck and bangs that completely shrouded most of his forehead from sight, and blue eyes that were rarely seen because when he wasn't dreaming, he was daydreaming, Jack Nicholson wasn't known for being anything-he wasn't fast, but he wasn't slow; he wasn't the brightest but he wasn't dumb; he wasn't outgoing, but he wasn't shy; he wasn't noted for being anything, and he was okay with that.
"This is the third time you've fallen asleep in class this week, Jack," the teacher said, raising an eyebrow. "If you can answer the question correctly, I'll let you pass."
Jack looked past his teacher, Dr. Hatcher, at the whiteboard. GOOD MORNING, CLASS! GET YOUR TEXTBOOK OUT AND FLIP TO PAGE 398!
As he gazed sleepily past Dr. Hatcher, trying to remember what they were talking about, the letters on the whiteboard shifted and changed, revealing new words: THE ANSWER IS: J.F.K.
Jack looked around the room to see if anybody had noticed, but nobody seemed to care; they were passing notes and sniggering at Jack's expense.
Dr. Hatcher grinned at Jack. "Give up?"
Jack bit his lip. "Is the answer John F. Kennedy?"
Dr. Hatcher was taken aback, but he cleared his throat to disguise it. "Yes, you are right. The answer to the question is J.F.K. Now, moving on..."

Austin Nicholson, Jack's twin, walked down the hall when a student in a hurry bumped into him. Both boys fell to the ground, and the other boy's books spilled. Austin helped pick the books up, then continued on his way. Before rounding the corner, he looked back at the boy and saw he was glowing with a yellow energy.
What the heck? Thought Austin as he made his way down the hallway.
As he walked down, he saw students talking. Two gossiping girls were glowing orange, a depressed boy glowing blue was trying to get something back from two boys glowing orange, and other things were happening, and each person he saw was surrounded by a different color light. He shook his head and turned around, heading for the nurse.
"In all my years of being a school nurse, I've never heard of a student asking for Advil," Cracked the school nurse, Dr. Walker. Austin swallowed them down without responding.
"You don't look well. Let me take your temperature, and if you have a fever or anything, I'll call your parents. Are any at home?"
"My dad should be," Replied Austin. After checking Austin's temperature, Dr. Walker looked at him quizzically.
"Your forehead's hot, but you don't have a fever. If you're feeling sick, just stay here." He said, before going back to his desk.

After school, Austin sat in the cafeteria, looking around. Nineteen kids were there, including Jack and Austin but not including Mr. Meller, who was the supervisor of the drama club.
"Where's Casey?" Jack asked, looking around.
"Right here!" Announced Casey, walking into the room as if he had won a gold medal at the Olympics. He held a stack of papers high above his head and he plopped them down in front of the whole group. "I revised all the scripts!" Austin noticed the highly conceited boy was glowing purple.
Jack took a folded piece of paper out of his pocket and spread it out. "And I've finished the blueprints for the scenery and stuff." He cast a grin at Casey, and Casey's smug grin melted into a sneer. His purple glow faded into a red one.
"Anyway," interrupted Mr. Meller, looking at Casey and Jack, "let's get this going. First act, second scene. Places, everyone!"

Jack took the steel box off of his nightstand and turned on the lamp. The words etched into the box read HAROLD T. BING. He sighed, placing it back on the nightstand. He had looked up the name without luck. He sighed and laid down. He stole one last gaze at the box before closing his eyes.
Jack's eyes flew open. He grabbed the box and looked at the lettering change and shift until it read: LOOK UP 'BING BOX'. Jack grabbed his phone and typed it in.
The first four pages of results didn't lead to anything, but finally the fifth page led to something promising. His eyes scanned the website, fixated on every word.

Austin grabbed pieces of paper and a few markers. He tried to remember the events that had gone throughout the day.
The boy who he had knocked into seemed nervous and hurried was yellow. He noted yellow as feeling anxious. He remembered the orange girls and the orange boys. How did those relate? He wrote under orange the word excited. He then noted blue as sad or depressed. He remembered how his hand had been glowing green when he went to the nurse. He wrote both sick and uncomfortable under green. He remembered how Casey had been so self-centered when glowing purple, and he was red when mad. He put conceited under purple and mad and angry under red.
Taking a break and feeling pride at his chart, Austin looked at his own hand, which was glowing purple. He didn't feel conceited, so he wrote underneath purple pride, also. He put the pencil down and looked at the chart. He grinned. He didn't quite know what was happening, but he knew he was glad-for the most part, at least. He still felt like he could use some Advil.
Hey, thanks for reading the first chapter! Feel free to post some ideas for plot or chapter titles in the comments, because I sure as heck don't have any! *winks*
